Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now

+100!

I'm old, but don't deserve to die just because some people choose to believe this is just "a flu."

According to the CDC, for those patients between 50 and 64 the death rate from the flu is around 0.06%, for COVID-19 it is around 8.0%!

For those 65+ the numbers are .83 for the flu and 14.8 for COVID-19!

Get your heads out of the sand people!

Agreed, it's a very serious threat for many.

My estranged wife is still undergoing Chemo. I don't even want to know the probability for someone with that level of compromised immune system.
My brother has Parkinsons.
Lots of friends in their 60s and up.
And I have a son who works in the hospital.

No, this is not funny.

It's way more serious than most think. This COVID-19 is a variation of the SARS virus, but it's way more contagious than the original SARS. In northern Italy it's killing dozens of older people a day. A friend of milan lost her 3 surviving granparent aged 89 and 91 and in good health in a week. She also lost an aunt of 52 in the same week. And this is upperclass milan with the best medical care in private hospitals. For the average italian it's much harder... And in Spain it's going the same way. France is in total lockdown and the rest of the EU is following it. This will cost billions and we don't do that without good reason!

My country Belgium is almost totally in lockdown, and we have way less death people yet, but it may come as the rate of contaminations is going up fast. I stay in home for at least the next week...

What I find incredible is the vast array of responses to this pandemic.

Some people, like one of my sisters, thinks it's "a scam". I am not sure what she meant by this, but I can only assume she thinks it is all made up.

Other people are literally building arks and filling them with supplies because they think the floods will arrive next.

In between those two extremes is every iteration of grey. Myself? Stocked up on some essentials, 21 cu.ft. freezer is full of venison (as usual), and working from home for the next 3 weeks (longer if necessary). Will minimize interactions with others. Why? Because my daughter has asthma and I have two elderly parents. I refuse to facilitate their deaths with my own negligence.

The 14% rate is for 80+, 50 to 69 is between 1.3 and 3.6. South Korea is much lower, Italy somewhat higher.

Edit: alternative to Reddit and Business Insider:

Cases in U.S. | CDC

And if someone thinks that it is just such a small number of cases, he should keep in mind that the number of cases doubles every 6 to 7 days (if not contained by precautions like the socalled social distancing) and that most likely the actual number of cases is already much higher.

The very low number of tests done so far will (most probably) not reflect the reality and let's not forget the incubation period.
The new LaRoche test method will hopefully speed things up....

The usefull confinment period is 6 weeks :

day 1 assuming you catched it : infection

2 days from 14 days is incubution : possibly with no symptoms

2 from 15days to 45 days : you become a vector/driver , possibly with no symptoms - 45 days is the time needed the virus disseaper from your body since day 1. it's not persistent as Herpes, HIV.

So to avoid bounce in time, better everyone stay confined.

If leaving with fragile people, try to keep 4 feets between people, clean light switch, hand door, fridge door with alcohol solution. Washing & disch machines: 60° C. No disches machin : put some bleach in the washing-liquid.

wash your hands before eating, after WC.

In te 45 days you have also the recovry phase (with possibly no symptoms before for many) where you can be still a vector/driver, so dangerous for over people !

Keep cool with family, books, films...and music 🙂

a little edit about the time needed to wash hand, I made a mistake above, here is the advice of the biologist other thread opener :

"here is no "temp that will kill the virus" that is a single answer. It's all about time. Technically, people will usually state that cold water and soap will be ten times less effective than warm water and soap. Warm would be 35-40C. But that is over time. So, 30 seconds is 300 seconds with cold water to be the same level decontamination."

Can you cite a reference? My understanding is that it is primarily the soap or detergent that does the killing. I've not heard anything from U.S. or China CDC that wash water temperature is a large or significant factor.

I use very hot water when I wash as a matter of course, but would like to be corrected.

Thanks for link to original article. I found it quite plausible and credible, unlike much information on the internet 😀 As for myself, I am 58, single, living in Florida. I'd cut many of my social contacts since March 3, due to a cold caught (likely) Sunday March 1. So this is a blessing sort of. I've stocked up on food, stores here still mostly stocked (03-16), I may venture out and load up some more. But I'm planning to stay isolated for 30-60 days at least. Oh, did I mention I still have the stupid head cold after 14 days? :grumpy:

@ oldermizer : well I don't think you need to stock more if what I wrote above are true (get if from a doctor at the tv, Italia iirc). each time you brek the isolation, you're not sure anymore ? 6 weeks is for an isolation without contacts in between 😉

Yes Kevin : +1 , I'm from Europe and repeat here at diyaudio again and again at the risk to be too much borring , as some are doing also... people are slow to understand because it's new, some changed their mind rapidly as Jan Didden honestly testimonied... showing good behavior !

Seems it must be repeated. What I write is more for South and North America cause you have a little more time to react and few days are a GREAT help... See what happen in GB ??? they have to rapidly change their mind...today... several days lost, will be translated into many deaths because the same joker is in the denial. I'm sad for the Queen whom begann with Churchill and has now the Joker... evolution laws didn't work here ! The news I'm reading about France is they totally lockdown (almost) and lost few days because of local pols ! too bad, hospitals are overwhelmed...

So beg your pardon but I relink the guy who was right, has to be read, short and very clear ; I’m an epidemiologist. When I heard about Britain’s ‘herd immunity’ coronavirus plan, I thought it was satire | William Hanage | Opinion | The Guardian

The first post said it all... still some people don't get it ! Denial maybe ?
