If you had $50,000 and had to spend it on speakers

L'Acoustics Kara or the larger d&b Vi8, with subs at least 4 a side for popular music. You will need a large room! Probably over budget.

Having heard a well-tuned L-Acoustics rig in a good room, it would be pretty hard to best it.

Otherwise, I think with $50,000 I'd be looking at Quested monitors with MC^2 S1400 amplifiers and a really well-designed room. The HQ210 would probably be it.

Some might choose to replace those S1400s with BSS EPC780s, but you'd need an acoustically isolated machine room to deal with the noise from them.

I cannot for my life figure out why anybody would want to replace MC2 S1400s with BSS amps.

Some feel that the EPC780 is one of the best amps ever built. Lots of people really like how they sound. Of course, no design will please everyone.

It was certainly a very innovative (if horrifically expensive) design. I myself would like get my hands on one for this reason- there's some serious engineering brilliance in it.

I cannot comment on whether the EPC780 or the S1400 is better. I haven't had a chance to listen to the S1400 (though I have spent considerable time listening to an MC650 and absolutely love it).

Me? I would probably go for the S1400 because there are too many parts in the EPC780 that are out of production. I doubt I would be able to pick out one from another in a blind test at low power levels.

Being honest, I have never shopped for such expensive speakers. The first step in the process, would involve going to high end stores, and actually listening to at least 10 different examples of speakers in this price range, and then selecting the best and getting out my credit card, or perhaps briefcase of cash! It might involve some travel, and I'm sure I'd learn a lot in the process.

Maybe a better option would be to go to RMAF and listen to a bunch of systems in a day, to get some inspiration.

I've been working a lot with L-Acoustics lately and will agree. Finally a PA that doesn't sound screechy.

Some of the Danley Sound line would give them a good run for the money, maybe even better for home audio. Either way, $50K would not go very far but could still make a killer home system.

I love my disguised MC650!

In fact I've got 3 MC2s although two wear different clothes.

Btw $100k should be enough for a pair of Quested HM415 and they come with a bunch of MC2s and XTA speaker management. Given a decent room that would do me.

You could get these (on one of the audio marts....) Just the speakers....

Personally, I'd invest in a wee bit bigger monitor for this setup.

Reliability on the MC2 stuff is excellent. I've seen 175k hours with nothing but a fan replacement. They're also pretty resilient- you pretty much can't blow them up.

Lowther PM4A in custom cabinets
GPA 604E in custom cabinets
Klipsch Cornwall or Scala speakers (Trip to NewYork to listen before)

Not sure if I would keep them all ;)

Got lazy with $50K ;)
Lowther PM4A in a diy TP1 Isis cabinet ($7K)
GPA 604E with diy cabinet design similar to the Stonehenge V, custom diy crossovers. ($12K)
Voxativ AC-C2 drivers... not sure how they sound except expensive.
In a diy BLH ($15K)
With $15K left for room treatment.

I have these in my living room, mid/high horn filled with sand, truly horrible speakers. Meaning, no matter what you do, eq, different kind of amps, they will always colour the sound quite significantly. They can go loud though.

A lot of $ for terrible results :( Did you buy them new and What is the cabinet design?
The reason why I would like Lowther drivers is that I fell in love with the sound 20 years ago at an audio show in Montreal. The guy had them connected to a 300B SET and it was magic. I don’t know if I will be able to reproduce the magic or if my tastes changed since. It’s always a gamble.

They were build by a very experienced Lowther builder from Amsterdam, don't recall his name as it was more than 25 years ago.

I have them hooked up to a 300b SET with Sowther iron. Don't know the schematics exactly, but its just 3 common triode stages before the 300b with cap coupling. Very basic.

Please don't let my opinion influence you.
