The Weather

If I've been someplace really cold for a time, I just take the car battery inside.
It was cold enough to completely kill the battery in my wife's car Tuesday night. She hadn't told me, but apparently it had been weak for a while. Our ongoing cold-snap finally killed it.

We had to leave her car at her workplace Tuesday night (everything was closed by the time she discovered her car wouldn't start), and I went and got her in my car when I got home from work. Next day she managed to get to the mechanic (don't ask, it was a matter of logistics!) The mechanics were nice but very, very busy with a slew of cars coming in displaying weird electrical ailments apparently triggered by all the snow and cold and moisture. Flashing dashboard lights, etc.

I'm awed and impressed with all of you who know how to cope with (-40) Celsius. Stay warm and safe.

And now it's about time for me to hit the road and slide around for the next hour and a half, trying not to play pinball with the other cars sliding around near me...

getting cold tonight, for a change,

Yesterday the Weather Channel promised a gloomy grey day with zero chance for precipitation. When I left for the gym at 7 AM it was raining....so much for zero. The rain had cleared by the time I got home, but gloomy and grey it was, so I went into the basement to do a W10 upgrade for a relative. Around 11:30 I went upstairs to see SUNSHINE. I went out side and found 39 degrees F (4 C) with no wind and ample sunshine......table saw weather. The Weather Channel still said gloomy, grey and 40F with rain coming around 2 PM.

I dragged out the saw, some wood and started working on a new cabinet for my modular synthesizer which has outgrown its third cabinet. 2 PM came and went without rain, or many clouds. The clouds came around 3 and the rain about 3:30.

Today the temperature was about the same....but there was a nasty COLD wind out of the north, but I still had to fix all of yesterdays mistakes and cut a couple more pieces. The Weather Channel again said zero chance of precipitation.....but the sky said otherwise. It looked ugly, but it wasn't raining, so I dragged out the saw. By 11 AM it was 34 degrees F (1 C) and there was a 20 MPH wind behind it with gusts that blew wood off the table. I kept at it with the saw, since the weather forecasts for the next few days look worse. Sometime around 2 PM the snow started.....game over.

My 84 year old neighbor who has lived here for his whole life came over around 11 this morning after the wind scattered his trash can. He pointed to the angry sky and said that winter is finally here. He is right. Forecast for tonight is 20 degrees F (-7 C). Colder tomorrow and Sunday night.

I used a deep cycle battery in my ‘63 Austin Mini, worked great.
Sometimes a battery charger to give a boost to start helps, just have to not let the car cool off too much in the course of your travels!

Did the flat tire freeze to the ground in a frozen puddle?
I had that happen in Detroit one time.

Getting warmer here north of Seattle now, hopefully no more snow...

It is an absolute mess around here. Everything is closed or will be soon. Many things cancelled.
I am the family shuttle bus as I have the vehicle for it. Unbelievable chaos around here. No one in this rainy town is ready for this sort of thing.
Gotta go. Lot's of family is in town for a dying FIL. The Monk has been summoned.

What's a dying FIL Cal?

You're much more persistent than I am. I used to roll my tablesaw out to the driveway when we lived at our old place, but the drive there was relatively level. Our new house has a much steeper drive, as I nearly discovered the hard way when unloading the tablesaw during the move. Wheeled cast iron power tools don't do the downhill slalom very well. At least the garage is larger. :)

Your neighbor is right. It's downright foul at the moment; 29 F with freezing rain. Sunday night is forecast to dip down to 9 F. That's not exactly International Falls cold, but I suspect the brass monkeys will be begging to come in nonetheless.

My driveway is nearly flat for the 50 feet leading up to the house. It is downhill from the dirt road for the first 60 or so feet, but slopes a bit to one side so that the snow, rain or mud flows off before reaching the house.

I keep the saw near the door for quick setup / teardown. I can setup, make a couple quick cuts, then tear down in about 10 minutes......which I'm about to do now.....Yes, its several degrees below freezing, but most of the wind is gone and the sun is trying to find a path out from behind the clouds.....it won't last so I must go...…..

Done.....made 4 little ones out of one big one. Unfortunately, soon the snow blower may have to push the table saw out of the pole position at the garage door.

The battery tender I had was nothing more than a transformer and a diode. I left it connected to a car in a garage that wouldn't be moved for the entire winter. When it was time to start it up, the battery was deader than dead. 4 volts open circuit kinda dead. It seems that the plates were covered in grey stuff and crumbled when touched with a screwdriver. Sulphation? Don't know, but the battery got replaced and the "Minder" went into the trash.

Yeah, I think battery tenders are crap too. In fact I won't use a charger small enough to not need wheels. From what I understand they are not well made, diodes heatsinked without grease, so they fail in a way where even though they all have fancy PWM functionality, they don't bother to limit current, so the diodes overheat and charge drops to a tiny trickle. Why do I care so much? This is what took out a computer in my Corvette. I have to admit that when it comes to this stuff, I am a power user (pun intended), having many years of keeping beaters on the road with tough winters.
