4 inch driver recommendation

Looking for a recommendation on a nice sounding 4 inch driver using it 250hz to 6 or 7 Khz. I will be using 2-4 drivers per side, so multiple driver set up. I want to keep it reasonable as I am experimenting, thinking the NOS Theils (but they are $50) or some SBA cheaper or even a dayton driver. I think they will be between $30-50 each. Thanks.

It's hard to do much better than the Peerless TC9FD or TG9FD 3.5" drivers. Their performance/price ratio is really astounding.

That said, the Theil drivers you reference (really ScanSpeak 10Fs) are better, but they are 4 times the price of the TC9.

PRV 4MR60-4 is a glass-fiber cone 4" that sounds great!

Wolf, The Alpha has a significant dip at 2khz. Was it obvious when you heard it and did it detract from the sound quality?

"have to" - no, but with combing you'll start getting into progressively worse peaks and dips (as you go higher in freq.) depending on the spacing between the drivers (including the driver's), the driver's dispersion pattern, and the angle of each driver - all relative to frequency.

-anyway, the driver I mentioned should work well enough for your proposed design.

To get at least some idea, do a quick model with this (and don't forget to move around the mic. position for off-axis differences):

-"speaker source density" should be a lower with increasing driver diameter.

For budget 4" mid woofers, SB12PAC25-4 and Peerless 830870 do a good job but may not go high enough for your needs.

For extra $ SB12NRX25-4 and Vifa NE123W-08 are very good mid woofers but then again may not go high enough.

I've also used SB65WBAC25-4, Vifa TG9FD19-04 and NE95W-04 but prefer the others.

The high 6-7kHz crossover point can limit your choice and be a problem with multiple drivers.

I will reconsider the upper end frequency maybe 4500? if that helps
