Polarity/Duality Consciousness is the Consciousness developed by your brain, better, by your two hemispheres, through the information given by your senses, it produces the Concrete Mind, and tells you that you are a finite being, that you are alone, limited, vulnerable, unworthy, and that everything around "is not you" and is capable of hurting you, physically or emotionally, so your brain-mind creates in response an armor, a crust of emotional and mental energy, called the Ego, which is a wonderful tool to Survive because it protects you from excessive pain from external stimuli BUT, being a non-specific filter, it also blocks all kind of good stuff, like love and sympathy. I am not saying that we don't feel those but we should feel all of it and all the time. The armor, like a breastplate, keeps your Heart "OFF". Your mystic heart has inside a "void", a virtual point that cannot be fulfilled with anything external: nothing external to you would ever satisfy this need and that explains why we search always for a new loudspeaker or for a new digital source or for a new fiance. 🙂 So, we function from Ego to Ego and that explains why relations are so difficult. Ego loves to feel outraged and offended, all the time 😀 and loves to judge everyone, including itself...
That void in your(our) Heart only can be filled, and for all eternity, with Pure Divine Unconditional Love (PDUL) and the only thing that you have to do is throw your armor far away and get rid of all 3D emotions, like fear, jealousy, rage, guilt, sense of unworthyness, sense of not being good enough, sense of being a victim, as nothing external can hurt IF you don't allow it to hurt you. Suffering is an "active function or reaction", meaning it needs energy to be called upon and to be maintained: it uses a lot of vital energy. You can surely notice that. But you can also "cut" the energy that powers that suffering, by will power and superior Mind control.
Once your armor is OFF, then your Heart can be "POWERED ON": He can awake and turn your consciousness into Unity Consciousness where you have the conviction that: I AM; I AM ONE; I AM ONE with the Source; I AM ONE with the Source of ALL LOVE, ALL LIGHT and ALL HARMONY; I AM ONE with My Superior Being (repeat the former sentences mentally or verbally many times). Then, when your Heart is awake, the void inside your Heart's Sancta Sanctorum will be filled with Pure Divine Unconditional Love and you will access Immeasurable Joy. Then, after your recently acquired spiritual maturity, a suitable partner will be attracted to you. 😉
That would do, in a very resumed way. 😀

Wow, that's not an easy concept to grasp. Does it come from a particular doctrine/religion or has it any scientific basis?

The old adage puts it more succinctly - you can't truly love another until you learn to love yourself.
That concept I can understand without resorting to Spirituality.
However, in Max's terms, Love is the Good Polarity. When this reaches its full expression within an individual, the resulting state of Conciousness may be referred to as Self-Love.

That's it. Many religions have this kind of (loooong) spiritual journey towards 'enlightenment'. You have to be there at each level to understand what you can understand. Words cannot help as it can be interpreted in many different ways. Psychology otoh, is skin deep, but that's the point anyway, because with psychology you tell (ordinary) people things they can or supposed to understand.
For example, how can someone with 'ego' knows anything about 'ego-less'? 🙂

The adage about 'you cant truly love other if you cant love yourself' is I think more about people with psychological problem called insecurity. Insecure person cannot give love because he/she has never had enough love even for him/herself.
Your words were similar to what priests say, meaning it is about higher spirituality. If we talk about higher spirituality, even priests are often 'victims' themselves. Talking about love, in some religions a priest will leave his family. In other religions, priests don't make family. Have you ever wondered why?
If you had kids, you know that you can love your kids more than you 'love' yourself. But is it so? Often parents think they love their kids (or anyone) when actually they love no one but their own 'self'.
