I can't even get 4G where I live.

I don't get ANY G. No cell phone service here (despite on line coverage maps to the contrary) except in winter when the trees are bare, then it's only 1 bar. There are two TV stations within 50 miles. but walking the entire property with a portable TV reveals no usable signals. 4 FM radio stations and 3 AM stations are receivable in my car on the property. An antenna on a spectrum analyzer (10 KHz to 3.2 GHz) with a 20 db gain 0.6 db noise figure RF amp in front of it reveals the mentioned signals above, and a few faint radio signals in the VHF and UHF spectrum.

However that was not the case in my childhood home. (birth through age 20). There was a 5KW (raised to 10KW in the mid 60's) AM radio station two blocks away. DIY guitar amps were a serious challenge as a kid.....the elevator music was louder than the guitar. The power transmission lines coming from the power plant to Miami International airport ran right next to my house. They had a faint blue/purple glow on those hot and humid summer nights.

I dont think I've been fortunate enough see Corona around HT lines (or unfortunate enough, depending on context), despite working in the power industry.

I do wonder more about ill effects of long term exposure to rotating magnetic fields, though the risk doesnt seem to be high (given the age and health of the majority of my more senior colleagues)

They had a faint blue/purple glow

I guess I should have been a bit more specific. The wires themselves didn't glow, the dirty insulators did though. Buzzed like crazy and made a mess out of AM radio and ham/shortwave reception up to about 10 MHz.

Cherenkov radiation from the FTL signals Big brother uses to track our whereabouts...I knew it!!!

This was the 1960's.....Big Brother was still just a "fictitious character" in a book about 1984.

Today Big Brother doesn't need to track us. A high level FBI guy has stated that his best surveillance tool is Facebook and the other social media sites.

Umm, you know I was kidding about faster than light, yes?

So many have no idea the ramifications of social media and the impact of infinite storage life.

1984..nah, think Soylent green...

.I look longingly at snickers bars from afar..

I can walk past most candy bars, but the seefood diet applies to cookies for me....If I see a cookie.....I eat it.

I used to be an athlete, now..

I was never an athlete, but I gave been going to the gym most every weekday for 20 years....Lately that's to compensate for the cookies and occasional bacon cheeseburger.

Umm, you know I was kidding about faster than light, yes?

Really, Ahead, Warp factor 3 Mr. Sulu......

1984..nah, think Soylent green..

I remember that movie, and Logan's Run, every time I see an advert for this stuff....and wonder why would they possibly choose that name.....but people have been buying enough of it to keep the company alive for 6 years.

A deep fried Mars Bar is said to be a Scottish delicasy.

If you're going to put on the pounds then do it in style!

I heard about several examples where inhabitants did not allow to plant GSM directional antennae (not 3G,not 4G, that happened before that time) onto the rooftop on high storey buildings. People were not interested in directivity and such technical terms, they said GSM radiates, so there is a chance it causes cancer, and they did not want an antenna on the top of their home. Even if the antenna installed on top of the opposite building would have caused more field strenght on them.
I just want to say people are seldom interested in scientific data, they are driven by emotions most of the time.

In many cases people are just afraid of things that they do not understand. Myself and both of my brothers all had college educations. Despite the efforts of all of us to explain things to my mom, she refused to give up her rotary dial phone. She did not want a computer or VCR in her house, and the TV set had an old mechanical tuner.

The phone company finally persuaded her to accept one of the old style mechanical button touch tone phones when the ceased supporting pulse dialing. VCR, computer, cell phone, modern TV....no way.

ring hook dial

I assume you mean the process of repeated presses on the switch hook?

I could never get the timing right to dial the correct number, but I remember doing this as a kid.

The south Florida phone company, Bellsouth was spun off of AT&T when they broke up the phone monopoly. Years later that was all undone and Bellsouth became AT&T again. Right about the time that happened AT&T got into the TV and high speed internet business. Those services were rolled out in different areas depending on what revenue an area would bring. My mother's house was done several years before mine. Basically they brought fiber to the neighborhood, then ran twisted pair to the home. This new twisted pair offered all the digital services, but gave up POTS. Some areas like mom's house didn't have a choice in the matter.

My neighborhood was one where the new digital service was offered at a higher monthly cost whether or not you subscribed to their digital service.....I declined. Most accepted.

When the big hurricane came through and flooded everything that underground vault with all the digital interfaces in it was full of very dirty water. My old analog twisted pair to the CO worked just fine, and was one of very few working phones in the entire neighborhood for over a month.

Got interested, looked up brain cancer stats. Noting that there has been a very small - 1 per 100,000 - uptick in brain cancers over like the last 20 years or so, and noting the cell phone really took off in numbers about that long ago. Where are all teh excess cancers caused by the cell phones?
