New Markaudio Drivers

Orangeart,

Will you be carrying the Pluvia 7 PHD (Japanese Market driver)?

If yes $ ?

I'm in the North American market but do not see it listed at Madisound.

Thanks

Andrew

Well I wasn't going to, but a few folk have asked so I've ordered a box full. They won't leave the factory until the end of the month at least and then take about a month to sail. I'll work out the pricing as soon as the factory invoice me.

Here is a mock up of 28 CHN-50R. I have increased the height to the nearest 5mm.

1.5-2 litre sealed will give you ~ 140 Hz second order to an array of woofers (or some EQ to take it lower, est 10 dB @ 80Hz to bring it up to an 80 Hz woofer, 6 dB @ 100Hz) … 2.5 litre vented could take you to 80 Hz 4th order (but would likely want some sort of electrical HP for safety). The latter would be best done as individual enclosures. That could invoke the use of a 3D printer to manufacture the back of the baffle structure.

I had a conversation about this with the factory. It is doable and a new square frame could be made of the correct dimensions to take the CHN-50 drive train. However to make the amortisation of the frame press tooling into the the final driver costs sensible there would be a MOQ of 3k. Prices would be about the same as where we are with the CHN-50 (TBC) for that. It seems like you would need a LOT of people to join a GB to get this off the ground. I'll happily run the manufacture and distribution part of it of you can get enough folk interested.

On the other hand, Scott and I did chat about an active eq version using the round drivers that might be more achievable.

Actually looking at this again and getting the factory to do some more maths I can get the MOQ down to 1000 which is more doable I guess. Price to the end user would look to be about $38-40 a pair. which is about £1100 for a pair of Dave's mock ups above. We'd need 18 people to make that doable.

Out of curiosity while I have a load of Mark Audio fans, what is the ideal amount of watts you need to drive these full range drivers. I'm specifying some new Hypex nCore amps and the price difference is small between the 120w / 250w / 500w (all at 4ohms).

Is more power wasted, or does it provide between 'grip' on the speakers. Domestic listening levels, big-ish room.

I’d opine that even the lowest power of that range would suffice. I’ve run them with anywhere between under 10 (real) watts of class D, to as much as a couple of hundred from Neurochrome Modulus 686.
If I was to de-rate the optimistic specs for the Onkyo receiver I’m using in the 7.1 system in which I’m running all MA drivers, it’ll likely be well under 120WPC, and in a smallish room (340sq ft), it’s more than capable of delivering all I want- well under 90dB on average.
Dave is currently using a First Watt SIT3 in a pretty large space and I don’t think he’s complained about lack of dynamics or been tempted to fire up his Toshiba 100 watter.

The lowest power will be just fine, they are quite conservatively rated too.

Hopefully you're specifying them from me :)

You joke, but Mark does have to attend driver signings in Asia at audio shows. Rare drivers like these may well be worth lots of Moolah.

Asians can be like that, looking for maximum originality. I met an artist that sold his house/atelier in Japan to a collector of his works, and the terms of sale stipulated that he couldn't even do the dishes or pick up his laundry from the moment of the sale. It's a funny old world.

Overlaid/scaled the two Pluvia models' FRs as best I could, 0-100 dB, 20-20kHz.
Blue = HD, Red = PHD. Apologies for the grim level of blur due to image scaling.

What's the MOQ to get Pluvias in grey-silver? Both these bronzy metallic colours clash with natural wood tones.

Actually, I quite find the copper colour works very nicely with most of the veneer species and finishes I’ve ever used.

That said, both cone colours should be readily available to all resellers, and I think their order quantities are based on perceived customer demand rather than factory MOQ - but Stefan or Adam from Madisound speak to that.
