I have an old V15VMR that needs a stylus. What opinions on bringing this back to life?? I have been using low to med price <1000 carts for years now. Would someone consider this a SOA MM cart these days?
Yes, but I'll buy it from you if you decide not to use it.
I'm running an original Shure V15 III with original Shure stylus, superb cartridge.
Yes it is, I'm using one also. Try the spherical stylus sometime, at 1.2 grams.
So I have read other opinions talking about the elastomers and the fact that they would not last over about ten years. If I'm replacing the stylus wouldn't that take care of these issues. Are there other elastomer components internal to the cart body?
I seem to recall that Shure recommended the JICO stylus as a replacement. I have a Shure v15vMR which I bought because the stylus resonance was advertised as 35 kHz. The V15vMR had outstanding performance when properly loaded. The correct load capacitance was about 100pF. The JICO stylus has a much lower resonant frequency and requires a much different load capacity than the Shure stylus. See this.

Sorry merlin, I got that price off the same LP Gear link as you gave in post #4.
I posted the price before I returned to the thread and read your post.
I have since found a UK supplier, which may be of help to you.
snvinyl.co.uk
Enter vr5mr in their product search box.
It brings up 5 results including the Jico at £245.

I recall purchasing new a Shure V15VxMR back around year 2000. I liked it better than an ADC XLM-III I had been using. There was much better bass with the Shure.
Of course by then the V15VxMR was not the same cartridge as the V15V that came before it.
However as I tried different cartridges and different tonearms and different turntables I began to gain a perspective that tilted somewhat in favor of moving coil cartridge designs. Regardless of which arm the V15VxMR was mounted in, it always seemed just a tad laid back in its presentation. (lazy) The VxMR does not have the quickest in transient attack. Otherwise, I found it to be a very competent tracker that offered up a very well balanced and coherent musical illusion.
So I sold mine on several years ago.
For a time you could get a Jico replacement stylus assembly for any V15 that came with a solid boron cantilever and the Jico house brand stylus profile. Those days are gone. Now Jico offers a stylus replacement assembly with a sapphire cantilever to which is attached the Jico designed stylus profile. I presume this will function well too.

Elastomers would only be used in the stylus assembly.

Exactly right. If you purchase a new stylus assembly, such as the Jico, you get fresh elastomer, new stylus and cantilever and everything that plugs into the cartridge body is assumed to be new.

Line contact or microridge will run circles around any conicals
They simply dont track high frequencys well due to physical limitations
Оnly genuine Shure stylus gives optimal results. Jico has lower resonant frequency which means higher effective moving mass. Shure V5 MR stylus has only 0.19mg eff. mass and 33KHZ res. freq. Jico resonates between 14-16 KHZ , which means estimated eff. mass something like more than 1mg.
Quite right. BUT: We all know that Shure is going to shut down their phono products section completely, or already has done so. So we have little to no chance to acquire a new production stylus as a replacement part. If we chance to buy a so called NOS Shure Stylus, we do not know the real condition of it. Has the elastomer suspension already degradated? No one knows...
Best regards!

So at this point not sure what I want to do. Does anyone know what I might be able to get out of it w/o a stylus. Use that toward something else maybe.

The "line contact" tracking is better, but the sound is different,
and some prefer the spherical for that reason.
