Another ZDT 3.5 - Hats off to John "Zaph" Krutke
I'm really enjoying them. John's plans were great. I pretty much followed them to the letter.
Zaph|Audio - ZDT3.5
At first I over dampened the cabinets and had lost all the bass. Port tube length and wool stuffing quantity had a dramatic affect on bass response. There is plenty. The removable baffles are a savior. I really like having the dedicated midrange. The soundstage does not compress when the music gets busy. Instruments take their places more clearly. It's fun hearing a bit more hidden information in the music that you never noticed before. They are a step up from my old JM Labs Cobalt 815's that once cost about 1800 USD list in their day. Ultimately I think these cost about 800 USD considering all the paint supplies, wire, veneer, inserts and jacks.
Well worth it. 🙂

Your first DIY speakers? you must me insane or quite confident.. Whatever it is I really love the result!

Thanks 😀
Whell I start this project like decade ago 😀
whell for last 5years loudspeakeers waited to be painted...🙁
back that I was younger, was fit, have more hair 😀
and most important without knowledge
( ignorance is bliss 😀)
but it was fun time
as it's fully active I spend some time building amplifiers, preamplifier's, DSP, trying different solutions
only after some time you figure out that active is not a good way to go if you don't have some passive system 😀 as if one component in chain doesn't work, the whole setup is not working 😡
no meter if it's one amplifier, one cable, one driver, one fuse or one resistor...and than you have to figure out whats wrong
not to mention that loudspeakers are the hardest part of whole diyaudio where everything meter...
driver placement, cabinet, cabinet dimensions, distance be twin drivers, distance be twin driver and cabinet boundaries, damping, material...etc...you know the story 😀
laminated of BB and MDF seamed like a good idea back than, different material different resonant frequency...
you could do interior as you like
but the problem is that MDF and BB have some work ( in horizontal ) and there are chances of micro cracks
and once glued, whole cabinet tend to ''work'' depending of humidity in the air at least until it's all sealed/painted etc.
well it was fun, and I would do it again 😀
I hope I will, with different drivers etc 😉
(or better not 😀)

I made these a while back.
I was looking at transmission line designs and thought, why use wood boxes with sharp corners? So I look around for pipes. These are 16cm diameter drain pipes. They are very stiff plastic. I also found some Wharfedale drivers on clearance for cheap.
Before you're too disgusted and after you stop laughing, they actually sound great, no "pipe" sound. I made some improvement since, like replacing the tape with a proper mounting bracket, but these old pictures are more raw 🙂

Nice work Yoke! That's a very tough way to build cabinets. You must have killed a few router bits.

This approach is not new. Your pipe is probably on the small size for an optimum TL, but as long as you are enjoying them :^)
An example of earlier work (but far from being the earliest):

jea, I notice that somehow my router don't do the job as as when it was new 😀
and have some strange sound, looks like bearings have some complaints 😀
but other than that, it's still working just fine 😀
