Scott, have you worked out what happens when you distort a square wave. Where do you think the 3rd, and other odd harmonics land? Somewhere where you can easily find them?
Yes, not that you would know.
This crock is resurrected every few years. Must be a problem with a short attention span.
I have rebuild your straw man experiment with this wantonly bad amplifier 9 years ago and I have proven that all frequencies that are created are intermodulation, and I even gave the order of the IM.
You used an op amp that was outdated even at the time of your original report, it was sandbagged with low operating voltage and a ridiculous input stimulus. And i also showed that a 25 year old LT1028 had no problems even with that abuse.
This is plain to see for everyone at < John Curl's Blowtorch preamplifier part II >

Well, it's roughly the same number of posts into JCBP-II as we are in JCBP-III, so it seems rather Groundhog Day'ish, Gerhard. 🙂
Hi Gerhard
I think it is a wrong link.
I found your first relevant post at JCBP-II on Sep 6 2009. The subject entered the scene one month earlier.
🙂

Gerhard, I am now talking here as to WHY we designed the test with a bandwidth limited SQ wave, and then ADDED an unrelated test tone. IF you read the first 2 pages that were written by Dr. Otala, not me, then you might learn something and save yourself from embarrassment later. Scott is concerned about something else entirely, and that is still up for contention.
For the record, I measured the best FET input IC op amp available at the time, the LF356 (in 1976) and published it in my IEEE article in 1978. Look at graph 1.

So, I am all for trying to gain linearity, but I have to ask how much more valuable do you guys using the Hirata's test, find it, over using very good transistor modeling and thermal balancing?
Why do you think anyone here who brags about has ever even used the Hirata test? You should learn to read between the lines.

Which parameters affect the sound but not the HD?
can we list all of them, pls.
How many are there?

The internet has failed to enlighten mankind in its race to the bottom 🙁
A bit OT but reminded me of a similar discussion we had at the time they started to roll out TV in my neck of the woods. TV would elevate mankind, now free education was in anyone's reach and we would now have a well-informed citizenship. Yeah right.

You could start with your own list, based on your extensive design experience.
Then we could see if we know any you missed.

Jan's recommendation is excellent. I too am looking forward to reading RNMarsh's list. It won't surprise me at all if his list includes bad parts and bad layout.

We have already been there, right? Several times. This one is only 3 months old.

Are we only talking hardware or is software on the table?
I'd argue mental disposition supersedes most anything not grossly going wrong with the equipment.

Like endlessly "improving" the engine on a SAAB trying to beat the lap record on the nordschlife...

At risk of disgusting Scott, those old SAAB turbos can be tweaked to suicidal levels (400HP, front wheel drive, bring it on 🙂 ).

Didn't I ask you/others first?
So, go ahead and start.

Thats what so nice about super chargers and turbo for power increases. Dont have to change cams and compression ratio's etc internally. With turbo's just reset the waste gate to higher level and A/F is automatically adjusted via fb from sensor. How cool is that?
