philips,BC,elna, ero etc etc etcJeezzz...What's the sound diffrence betwen 2003 and 1969?
What output cap and tranistors are you using in 1969 versions?
the sound is not the same ,more bright for 2003 ,more bass for 69 .
for me the biggest difference is that the 69 takes off from the first dB and not the 2003
Hi Huggygood,
It has been a long time since i read this thread.
There are alot of potential improvements to be made to this amp.
It looks like Prasi has made a nice board design.
The settings have not been an issue for me in the 1996 version.
I am quite pleased with the sound from the 1996 version, to be fair I am using MJ15003, LM338K(T-03) upgraded supply a and some other small tweaks.
It is an old William Hart Audio PCB set.
Regarding the 2003 update, are you talking about Geoff Moss' work?
Do you have a link to the circuit?

I see you have a 30w Hiraga as well. Did you compared them?
Thanks. If you always come back to jlh it has to be good 🙂 . Why all your amps are based on 69 schematic? Do you find it best sounding? I have to decide which version I'll build and I'm double-minded now 😀 .
Yes. They are both nice sounding amps,
I would not say better or worse, but they both sound good in different ways.
I will say that both of these amps have a good "imaging" ability.
But both consume alot of power and you need to invest in the power supply and heatsinks....

Yes. He talks about jlh 2003 version. I'll go with '69 anyway because I don't need more brightness and more bass would be useful 🙂 .
I'll try Chinese kit or this pcb

no,hi have a big respect for Geoff Moss and his works.
a former forum member had taken over his work, made some changes, created a new pcb and marketed it as JLH 2005.
there is a theard on the forum that talks about it under the name "FREE pcb JLH 2005"
The original (69) version is also working with modern parts.
I use bc559 , bd139 en en 2sc3264.

BC 559c and BD 139-10 is perfect
As huggygood says, the amp can by fine tuned.
The inputcap tot kind is a audionote copperfoil.
Outputcap a nichicon (KA serie)
These give ( for me) the finest results.
The capacity in the psu should not be too big.

hi never used nichicon KA series but I will try 😉As huggygood says, the amp can by fine tuned.

i'm old school but i like the philips HP series
and BC AEROVOX
Yes the high gain version 139-16 wil give oscillations.
The normal versions does not do this.

The nichicon is designed for audio.
I use them also in the psu,
Before using big cans (4x10K per mono amp)
NOS using 2x4700-aircol 2,2mH- 2x4700uf.

That PCB is nice and compact, my thoughts are those on board caps I think are for addition to the "power supply" it's unlikely these will remove the supply ripple.
But they would improve dynamics being so close to the amp module.

i used always the same psu for all of my jlh 69The nichicon is designed for audio.

NOS using 2x4700-aircol 2,2mH- 2x4700uf.
big cans (20to40k) power resitor (0.2 to 0.47ohm) mid cans 10k to 20k
with a good result to silence, space , bass and hight f.
i never used reguled psu ,I would have to try
after that, I think it also depends on the music we listen to and the entire hi-fi system.
I have a passion for old cd player philips using the TDA1541 in non-os mode

Here is my approach recently, this one is regulated.
1996 version, I upgraded the bridges, capacitors regulators
There are plenty of mods left to improve this one.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

GOOD CD player !!!Very good dac
