The food thread

I should have pointed that out. It's not my cigar nor cigarette - I don't smoke.
To our collegues do, and they waited til everyone had finished eating before pestering the air.
Not meaning to defend their actions, but we were sitting outdoors.

Nowadays, I don't think any European country allowws indoor smoking in restaurants and many countries don't allow outdoor smoking either.

I thought it was funny when we were in Paris in the winter. The cafes had "outside" tables that were semi-enclosed (awning, heaters, plastic sheets to stop the wind) and everyone was out there smoking. There were very few people inside. On a cold rainy night my wife and I were the only people seated inside at the George V while a happy group of smokers sat outside.

That plate didn't look finished though. 🙂

Love czech food btw especially the dumplings. Gotta try making some soon.

This thread is also great for dinner ideas. I found a spin-off of Hasselback potatoes on SeriousEats.com - the Hasselback Potato Gratin. It's my wife's new favorite potato dish. I might add a bit more cream and maybe some onions the next time.

All this Central European food sounds so good - my German father cooked a lot like that.

Are the dumplings the white rounds on the plate? I usually think of them as more ball-like.

IIRC Czech style, we had a tiny restaurant run by an expat for years in Cambridge, Stanley Mixa and his wife doing everything. Many fun dinners, beef with dumplings, cabbage, and what he called "plums pie". Nothing ever replaced it.

Thanks Magnus. You and Scott shortened my search for that. I think I found some recipes and even a couple you tube videos on that style. One video I found was for "Domácí knedlík" from a website called the czechcookbook.com. Her videos all seem to lead off with ads for vinyl LPs and turntables.

I've had one of the best sunday lunches in a sorbian (ethnic czechs) restaurant near Cottbus (aka Chosebuz).
A duck leg, two small pork chops, salted&smoked beef with gravy, sauerkraut, red cabbage, dumplings and potatoes all washed down with black beer.
Heaven...

There used to be a small restaurant here called The Czech Inn with very good Central European food (same room now holds a Philippino place called Rocky's). My favourite dish there was Viennese garlic soup. The brought you a soup bowl, in the bottom which were 3 equal-size lumps: a large egg yolk, a pile of deeply caramelized fried onions, and lump of garlic butter. They also gave you a basket of warm croutons, and a teapot full of boiling water. You then poured the water into the bowl while stirring until the texture was smooth and to your liking, then added the croutons. Delicious! (And DIY)

If I were his mate, I wouldn't let him back in the house after one of his "night out's"

I like the stream of 1 and 2 star reviews on his restaurants. I see he admires the farmed fish pens too. 😡

Think what you want about Mr. Ramsay his show exposing the shark fin industry was pretty cool especially his dining in a fancy Chinese restaurant in HK or Taiwan and asking basically, "Why do you eat this boring shite".
