My first build was a TQWT (Tapperd quarter wave tube)and still lives with me today... I used a Philips AD9710 no filter and industrial carpet to cover the inside. Although I have build some other speakers this first build still sounds great and will never leave the house.

The total costs including the drivers was around the €165...

I'm looking to build my first full range speaker.
What's the easiest build for a beginner?

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum, also being a newbie on here i can say with experience the forum members here are a brilliant at helping you achieve your diyaudio goals!

I am currently going through a similar experience on what to build (actually looking to build a few enclosures).

What Driver/Loudspeaker will you be using? I'm using the Mark Audio Alpair 7.3

Does you £250 budget include the speakers or is that just for the build of the enclosures?

Thought i'd share some ideas with you as you said you liked the pensil series

Woden Design

You may like the look of these.

Meet the Fonkens

A little warning, like you i was going to build a simple bass reflex box, but after communicating with the guys (i blame chrisb) i am now planning on building a set of trapezoid mini onken enlcosures, and to help in low end bass department i want a FAST system of some form. Yea i didn't know what any of that meant last month either :D hahaha.

You should if possible go listen to a few of the designed enclosures, if thats not possible the simplest easiest build would be a simple bass reflex design (again repeating the advice i've been told) With a Good Full range speaker, a good amp it will make you enjoy your music until you get bored and want to try another more challenging speaker design (maybe thats just me?)

Good Luck and enjoy

That's the spirit! :D

Edit: I think more of us can put some form of "blame" on Chrisb for his advise and encouragement. And of course Dave (P10). Hearty thanks to both! :)

IIRC, I spoke from the outset on the extra challenge of the trapezoid shaped enclosures, particularly for something like a floor standing tower for "sub" woofer support of the smaller FR drivers, so vish needs to own up to some of that .;)

and re the Pensils, to avoid putting words in Scott's mouth -something for which he has low tolerance - I'll quote from the front page of the full plan set (circa June 2011)

http://frugal-phile.com/boxlib/pensils/Pensil-Series-set-100711.pdf

"Damped Air Coupler

They use a combination of traditional quarter-wave design, a custom T/S volume alignment, and Transmission Line damping to provide a balanced response with a flavour of both vented and TL enclosures.

The Pensils are designed not to require any form of correction circuits for (baffle) step loss. This is achieved through a combination of the compensation already built into the driver responses, and the damped air alignment, which together bring the system response ~ flat in room. The impedance load is easy, being largely unreactive, and driver displacement is well controlled"

Note that with several new / revised drivers since then, this particular plan set might be not fully up to date.

Example above, "Tabaq" is a well discussed enclosure on the forum. It has its own mammoth topic and has spawned a few discussions elsewhere. One thing it doesn't do is to be particularly loud.... If built using a single 3" driver.... There are, however, variants using 4", 5" drivers and even more traditional 2-way systems.

Four "contemporary" designs for the 10.3:

Pensil 10.3 - http://frugal-phile.com/boxlib/pensils/Pensil103-plan-300114.pdf

Bob Brines M10-A10 (paid plan set)

Big TABAQ for Alpair 10.3 - http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/88787-tabaq-tl-tang-band-10.html#post3292265 with adjustment for the 10.3 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/88787-tabaq-tl-tang-band-18.html#post4043489

Jim Griffin MLTL for Alpair 10.3 - http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/265066-mark-audio-alpair-10-3-mltl.html

I'll be honest, I'm struggling to see the differences in these designs! It's it just a box with a hole in it?:rolleyes:
