Best 3 way DIY speaker under $2,500?

Are you aware of the logical fallacy, False Equivalency?

If some people ask imbecilic questions, it isn't unreasonable to label them imbeciles. All you have to do is look at some of the questions asked on this site, such as, "i jus instaled a 4 miilion watt amp to drive my 2 million wat speakers in my car and wen my eers bled the amp bust in flaims.what is wrong/".

I shouldn't need to remind you not all DIYers have angel wings and a halo.

Another for the list.

Unfortunately our hobby has shifted to the far right of the "Facts<---->Snake Oil" continuum over the past 30 years. I have stacks of hifi magazines from the 70s and no-one there talks of Shakti room enhancers, "directional interconnects" or magical 2-foot power cables. Each issue is packed with genuine advances (complimentary PNP-NPN power transistors, quadraphonics, balanced power supplies, Thiele-Small explained, etc.).

Those magazines have disappeared and the only ones that remain are where hucksters who "cannot review without looking at the brands but think this $30K cable has no right to sound as rhythmic as a $60K cable!" rule the day.

It is hard to imagine how newer audiophiles, fed on this garbage, can avoid sounding like an imbecile. They may in fact be smart, well meaning and most certainly they are part of the community. Ken Livingstone once explained to me that, unlike business, in politics it is hard to choose who you deal with as you need to carry that alcoholic MP, snoring on your shoulder, to his home, as he votes for your causes. Hobbies are a bit like that.

So not complete false equivalence.

I set similar goals when looking to buy my speakers. I wanted proven quality affordable top of the line drivers within a full range speaker that I could build and not spend more than $3k.

I choose the J.Bagby SB Acoustic Satori 3-way. It costs about $1100 in drivers and crossover from Meniscus Audio. It is a modular system so you can use different monitors and mate them to the woofer. You can also buy .5 cuft speakers boxes for the monitors and use them till you have the woofer cabinets. I could get the all the cabinets made or bought for about $400 in raw mdf. Still need to finish the upgrade from the Adelphos to the Kairos crossover version and speaker box, but I built the Adelphos version to make my life easy.

Troels has a very similar speaker using the same drivers:

DearS-
I used a table saw for almost all the work, but also used a router for the round-overs on the cabinet faces as well as the internal braces and the chamfering behing the drivers. The project took a bit longer than expected, but the end product was worth the time and effort.
I have a hard time making large pieces perfectly square, but a shop built sled helps a lot.
Use the saw fence to cut multiple pieces exactly the same size.

IMO something like Bagby's Kairos, sealed and XO'd to a pair of dual subs using top woofers for bass reinforcement. Acoustic Elegance comes to mind. You could probably get something like dual TD12S woofers with plate amplifier.

Of course, if we are going to huge SPLs, a high-end SEOS-based speaker could also be an option. Linkwitz's LX521 are also a strong choice.
This would be my suggestion. If you're open to more than 4-way, then the NaO Note II RS.

After reading the comments:

1) Post the crossover and cabinet design for your current speakers. Maybe an expert will notice a weakness in the design.

2) (classic-rock and vocals) Maybe you would favor the dynamics and frequency range of an exceptional 7" midbass like the Satori MW19P-4 over your current 5" midrange. Attached example of 2-way design which uses LR4 passive crossovers, which will closely match the LR4 electronic crossover in most sealed box woofers. The Satori MW19P-4 covers the full vocal range.

3) Because you already have a pair of quality sealed box woofers, I still believe building a high efficient horn/waveguide TM (post #10) would best fit your room and musical taste(classic-rock and vocals). diysoundgroup.com Fusion12 comes to mind. Easy to find many proven EconoWave designs at any size and price point.

Thanks, I may buy a table saw + sled at some point in the future.
