The counterbalance is not consistent through the range of motion. I suspect that two more sets of springs at a different pivot point will assist linearization.
F=-kx
Doesn't operation depend on k, among other things?

Thanks, didn't find that, probably used the wrong search terms. k is available in a large number of values. Actually have a nice collection.
Mr Simon,
you can define the geometry/equations/parameters in Excel, plus add angle steps to calculate/check equilibrium in every position of the screen-arm.
(even possible to visualise it in dynamic mode, Microsoft graphics uses Excel as core)

That would be me. Back in the 70s we used to host the Palm Beach Mensa club meetings at our house. I - of course - was the village idiot.I've met some really dumb people over the years with high IQs, members of mensa etc....
But all in all, it was a diverse and fun group of people. Most were very good at puzzles, games and drinking. I was good at one of those.
Average IQ has risen due to....
Average IQ, by definition, cannot change. It is 100. Always.
I always recall that great philosopher, G. Carlin. To paraphrase... "Half of the humans on this planet are below average"...
As to math problems attached is a picture of my latest project.
Sigh....geometry challenged are we???
The second arm restoring force goes down as the arm comes up to horizontal, but the joint torque is maximum at horizontal.
Just put bigger knobs on the friction brakes and call it a day...

George: Need to get you a whoosh Parrot 🙂
It will make for a nice company 😀
(I can only suspect the meaning )

As to math problems attached is a picture of my latest project. A well used device that is intended to hold up a small tablet computer over the mixing console. Easy to build, but I suspect the standard approach of the spring counter balance is wrong. For anyone willing to try the problem the arms are .5" x .5" x 23" and weigh .4 ounces per inch. The spacing is 2.5" and the spring point is 6.5". The counterbalance is not consistent through the range of motion. I suspect that two more sets of springs at a different pivot point will assist linearization.
For mechanically unaware the the holes are .25" and the edge of a hole is the same as the diameter from the edge, except for the spring holes. That gives close point pivot spacing of 1' for clearance.
Look into how they do this for things like dental equipment?
Better system...
...better still just buy an appropriate used one... they do it for the lights and the trays...
...and the entire cause for IQ increases can be traced to the advent of McDonald's burgers...
believe me.
...not the fries though.

Hmm. When I was a kid, teachers would tell my parents I "wasn't working up to my potential". I of course assumed that meant I was naturally brilliant and they were so frustrated about not being able to shape me to their plans.
But now I know that it just meant that I seldom did the damned assigned homework!

No, most sports figures and entertainers make lousy money. The ones at the very top do well- and the same for science (as well as most other occupations). Amar Bose, Kary Mullis, Linus Pauling, James Watson... these guys weren't living in rowhouses driving Yugos. 😀
Not a big fan of "homework".
Could not fathom why I had to spend about 8 hours IN school, then come home and do the SAME THING AGAIN? I figured that if I couldn't learn it in school, and I had to learn it at home, WHY GO TO SCHOOL???
Wanted to do "other stuff" once I got home - you know things that were actually interesting.
Besides, I always end up working from wanting an answer or solution to or for something and then going back as
far as necessary to learn whatever was needed and build up in order to GET the answer. Otherwise, frankly, and still to this day, if I don't
have a good reason to learn something, I'm unable to get motivated. Obviously a mentally challenged individual in this respect.

I was like you, Bear. I suspect that most people that contribute here were forced to do a great deal more in high school by either parents or by the school system they were enrolled in, than you or me. I had a GREAT TIME in high school, but mostly with my buddies after school. I know that I have had to pay for this once I decided to study engineering, having to make-up the lost years when I could have learned the math more fully. I am not sorry for the good time that I had, however. '-)
Oh, I was forced to do the homework!
But it had little effect on my "grades".
Some people get a "full hand", I got a partially "good hand".
Generally speaking I was the one who "got" the concepts, understood the abstractions instantly and was the one who got asked to apply the information. I was very very poor at wrote memorization, which is the foundation for "testing". Very short term recall is tested, almost no "understanding".
Years later (here playing the fiddle, with a mournful tune...) I realized that I've got a
type of learning disability relating to the ability to memorize. So, succeeding at academics is much much easier IF you have that memorization capability. Some have both the memorization and the higher understanding.
It's hard for those who have an easy time of remembering detail to understand why
others like myself are so poor at it. Everything is much easier if you can simply remember what was said or written... not as much understanding is required.
But that's my sad story - poor, poor, pitiful me.

Any tips for dumb folks ?
(Hulk Hogan used to be my role model. He scored 85 on the McDrive ranking, afaig)
This is tradition. Slave-turned-chariot racer from Ancient Rome who earned a staggering £9.42billion Gaius Appuleius Diocles immensely strong but illiterate athlete pocketed a cool 35,863,120 sesterces in prize money during his career - the same as £396million a year in today's terms. The world does not seem to value intelligence; It seems that entertainers

Exceptions make the rule nowadays, eh? Yes, certainly in terms of the public eye, this is the perception, but entertainers and athletes make up such a small percentage of the rich (and don't even remotely make the richest-of-the-rich) that it's almost meaningless. Certainly less appeal, but nerds rule the roost.
