Sony vFET Amplifier Part 2

In regards to PCBs, I have updated the registration of interest form so you can now state that you are only interested in a set of PCBs, and not in the kit itself. We have a few spare PCB sets so first in best dressed. If you've already registered your interest, click on the confirmation link you were sent and update your preferences (as shown below) to indicate you only want PCBs.

Bunch thanks to Mr Pass for top notch wonderful layout boards.
Thanks to Jason for supplementary option possibility that is greatest news today
& good reason to be smile :happy1: DiyAudio Store Rock !

ps. registration updated

I noticed that the form didn't allow you to select "0" (or none) for the number of supplemental kits. I've updated that, and also increased the number of chassis/UMS heatsink choices. If anyone would like to update or correct their preferences I've included a graphic below (basically, just click in the email you were sent to confirm your registration).

gentlemen,

thanks all of you and best wishes for making this project happen to us! 🙂

do I understand correctly that there will be two kits available, the "essentials" and the "supplemental" , and in these kits all required components and parts (with optionally amp housings) are included?

how about the PSU? are you going to provide it as well ? or this is already on diyaudio store from the former projects?

my wish is to order a complete set of everything if possible ;-)

best regards

The diyaudio PSU PCB is compatible with this project, but I believe that the transformer and PSU components, as well as internal wire, connectors and assorted parts will have to be sourced independently. The supplemental parts kit is to assemble the amplifier pcbs if I understood correctly.

thanks for the info... i wished the organizers would provide all required parts and componets as the amp cam amp kit ... much easier/faster to build ;-)

Parts in waiting

Had the harder to get goodies on hand to build the amp for some time. Just need the PCBs and VFETS to hit the ground running. Once those are here only have to decide whether to cut the gain on my BA-3 or use a DCB1 for the preamp.

Cant wait!

There is one kit available for sure, The Essentials
That has the 2pairs of VFETS, the 2 PCBs, the 2 brackets, the mica insulators, the thermal grease, and all the nuts and bolts and washers to mount the Active devices to the PCB and PCB to the bracket, and the bracket to a chassis, which isn't supplied. The bracket will bolt perfectly onto the UMS heatsinks with their threaded holes. The heatsinks are available separately or are included with the deluxe chassis. The bracket will of course work with many other chassis' if you drill and tap holes in the heatsink to fit.

We haven't decided if we can do the Supplemental Kit which would include most of the electronic components. for the amp PCB. There seems to be interestso we are considering it.

In either case the power supply parts aren't included. No PSU PCB, electronic components or the transformer.

If things work out, To get the most complete kit you would order:
The Essentials Kit
The Supplemental Kit if we offer it

From the diyAudio Store:
A 4U or 5U Deluxe chassis (4U is fine for most environments)
A Back Panel Parts kit
A PSU PCB

You would still need to obtain the transformer and PSU components

Just a quick mention - when you sign up to the notification list, you are sent a confirmation email, which contains a link that must be clicked in order for your signup to go live. This is all using the popular Mailchimp platform, so there should be no system more reliable than that, but two people have said they didn't receive that confirmation email. The confirmation email needs to be opened and the link inside that must be clicked in order to get added to the list.

If you didn't receive it, please (1) check your spam/promotions folder, (2) do a search of your entire inbox to see if you maybe have set up an email filter that squirrelled it away somewhere you don't look, and (3) if you still can't find it please re-submit your application. If you use the same email address, it will re-send the confirmation email.

If all else fails, just email the answers to the signup questions to us at contact@diyaudiostore.com.

The signup link again: Sony VFET Kit Interest Group

The response has been great and the list will be closed for applications shortly. The kits will be available for sale from the store initially via a secret URL that will be made available only to people on the list. After 72 hours the kits will then be available for sale to the general public at the store. This should give everybody that has great interest in this project to enough time secure their kit and not have to worry about missing out. Thanks for your patience 🙂

2 pairs of the VFETs are included in the essentials kit. please forgive my ignorance , but don't we need 4 matched pairs (8 in total) of them for a stereo (or a pair of mono) amp?

The original version was designed with 2 pairs per channel for higher output at a lower distortion. Then Nelson did some more testing and found that only one pairl per channel could be used at just a little more distortion and still with great sound. This way he could make double the amount of kits available.

thanks for the info. what is the expected power per channel at 8 ohm in this kit version? around 10W maybe? is the psu changed from +-28v to lower voltages? any diagram posted for this kit version?
best regards

I would think around 20Watts/channel. PSU should be the same (or similar to) as in the original schematic, standard PASS power supply using 3 CL-60 inrush current limiters. Look at the previous posts for a diagram I think it is very similar to original (which had 4 Vfets in each channel) with a pair VFETS removed. But please don't quote me for this!
