Post #5284There is not info on input impedance of the kypton V.
But im surprised that the distortion in ND is more than in V.
The schematic diagram is clear🙂
Kypton ND is a CFA amplifier while Kypton V is a VFA.
How was the sound of Kypton-V? Was this the one you thought sounded tube like? I never did build this one.
Hi Jeff,I like the Krypton V as general amplifier.I can feel the low airea(bass) ,unfortunately I can't say what is the best in this <<travel) 🙁How was the sound of Kypton-V? Was this the one you thought sounded tube like? I never did build this one.
Truth is that CFA has more details in high frequencies while VFA has more bass, but some of them are the acrobats between these conditions.

PS Finally only way to know is using top class flat speakers.
I haven't such a thing.

I've been finding the same results when comparing CFA/VFA. I need a proper AB comparison rig like Terry has to confirm it's not just my imagination though.
Maybe there is no chimera of VFA/CFA and those looking to take advantage of the best attributes of each need to consider a nice Linkwitz-Riley crossover and going at least 2-way active. Use the VFA for the LF range and the CFA for the HF range. Been thinking of trying this myself.
I read that you prefer the sound of N.S instead of Slewmaster.😀I've been finding the same results when comparing CFA/VFA. I need a proper AB comparison rig like Terry has to confirm it's not just my imagination though.
I've come to the some conclusions , I have my two wolverines in .... listened to
Pink floyd - pulse , some Megadeth at megavolume.
Wolverine and the CFA's highlight the high end (treble). Symasym is a
" some of them are the acrobats between these conditions" type of IPS.
So is the spooky.
I listen to each for months at a time , thousands of hours each.
Now , out of K-ND/C , spooky , symasui , wolverine - I must say
The spook is my overall favorite. I'll run these wolverines a bit more ,
but I know the sound of the Hawksford VAS (spook) is what I will
gravitate to.
On that subject , I think it is the topology .... but mostly the VAS ,
that influences an amp's character.
The Hawksford (like in the luxman amps) - rule.
PS - one exception might be the Kypton V , I am going to redesign it's
IPS PCB ..... I am impressed by thimios's tests !

I liked the sound of the Vertical NS-OPS better than the Slewmaster Wolverine abomination I put together, but the Wolverine was modified to be a subwoofer amp, then redone as a full range, so it's not a fair comparison.
I have an AB test rig in the works.

Biamping as also another good reason to build more amplifiers! 😀 I'm starting to get a pile going.
Pete,if you want to see other IPS test please feel free to ask🙂I've come to the some conclusions , I have my two wolverines in .... listened to

BTW i will put the Spooky and Wolverine on test bed soon.
Correlations
(below) Spookyamp is the only one that approaches the -90db PSRR level
under 100HZ.
The symasym is second , the wolverine is >120db between 1K-20K (but not at 45hz) ....
and the CFA's suck for PSRR 😛.
It is ironic that the IPS's that I consider "bassy" have the "goods" <100hz ??

It sounds like Spooky is going to be one of the inputs integrated with an output board.
Spooky,Symasui are the VFA champs .
I don't know which CFA yet ??
The Symetri would be a good starter amp (fully integrated).
JW , you know I want to add I2C output/rail capability to any integrated
offering !

I've actually been wanting to try to design an integrated amp with rail disconnects and speaker protection on board. Just plug in a single connector to a microcontroller and go. They work well as is with rail disconnects on the supplies and speaker protection at the binding posts, but it would be neater still with it all self contained. I'm getting my aluminum anodizing system perfected first, then I might work on something like this.

spooky amp with buffered VAS??
OS or another could you also simulate a spooky amp with the buffered vas stage from kypton ND?
I would like to see how far we can take this amp and i have a HK990 clone more or less to modify.
I will use 2 pair slewmaster OPS and +-50v PSU for this project.
Best regards

So Dr. Leach got it right so many years ago. The Symasym opened up a new way of thinking too. I guess a good idea is a good idea. 😀Spooky,Symasui are the VFA champs .

You would like me to blaspheme the Spook ??
Ha ! already done (below).
-reduced parts count with just 1 current adjust.
-Tube like self - clamping overload (like the ND).
-THD - a little lower <27ppm THD20K
Specs out the same as the original , except improved thermals , clip behavior,
and has a lower component count.

As was said , this is 1968 "prior art" . I HATE CFP OPS's.

Thanks☺
Could you also remove the cascode from input and VAS?
