Now, back to the regularly scheduled program. I'm getting an increasing amount of questions regarding driving 4 Ω with the MOD86. It's perfectly possible. I should add some bits about that on my website. With the recommended Power-86 + Antek AS-2222 power transformer, you'll get about 65 W into 4 Ω with vanishingly low THD.

Bill,
You mistake Kiwis for Aussie.
They are nice and laid back.
Kiwis are straight talkers.

Tom,
You might to design a current amp for the same reason you designed a voltage amp--whatever that is.
"Better" is probably subjective and I'm surprised Bill hasn't jumped on you for using that term. I would say potentially "differen"t--though I haven't heard one. But I get an indication from a variety of sources that it might suit my compression driver.

My Modulus-86 has been on tour lately. It's actually got 35v rails and was quite happy driving my brother's Dynaudio Contour 1.8 speakers - a 3 way, 4ohm 86dB set. We listened for about 6 hours non-stop and it sounded "exceptional" and "something special is going on here" - my brother's words. His normal amp is a Sugden A21 SE - around £2400 new. It also went to the HiFi Wigwam show where it drove some big JBL 4 ways and some tiny LS3/5a clones with equal ease in a very large room creating a fabulous soundstage.

Awesome. Thank you for letting everybody know. It's testimonials like that which keep me going. I'm glad you like the amp.

No problem Tom, your amp is worthy of the praise it gets. Here's a picture of the speakers it was driving at the Wigwam Show - you get an idea of the size of the room. Now getting started on the new preamp:)

well Thanks anyways for the useless review LOL...:headshot::headshot:

Oh dear Sk8Ter, what's upset you so much? Clearly my brother was expressing himself in relation to his experience with his current amplification compared to the Modulus-86. The rest of his system is none too shabby, Linn Sondek, Origin Live Illustrious arm and Ortofon Kontrapunkt B cartridge so as far as listening to recorded music goes reasonably discriminating but obviously not up to your magnificent system.
As to hearing live music, it's true, I haven't been to a live concert since, oh, February - Nigel Kennedy at the Colston Hall, Bristol performing his take on the Four Seasons amongst other things. Let me think, drums, double bass, three violas, piano, harpsichord and of course a few violins - and no, it wasn't amplified.
The Modulus-86 is, in my opinion, a quite excellent amplifier compared to other very decent amplifiers I've owned and does a first class job amplifying recorded music.

@Sk8Ter: You have nothing to add. Think twice before posting here please. Ian is happy with his amps which is what it's all about. P*ss on another parade...

Now we know your tom's number one cheerleader but you have Nothing to add but tell me to go away hmmm really?

I grow tired of all this internet bs .....I built it and spent my money so it's the greatest thing since well you know what!? Lol please

This has nothing to do with me or my system but a truly flawed audiophile community ...hifi used to mean something!! like I have been talking about!!!now it's all about I like how it sounds so it's "excellent" really give me a freakin break

With all that said we as a community will never ever get there (real musical experience) keep going round round playing with themselves/equipment telling themselves this is excellent ...are you getting it?!

I want to apologize to tom and everybody it's just that no one gets it I feel all alone and more importantly no one seems to care! Measurements just don't pass muster!! You have to quantify what you hear and measure that's what it's going to take

End rant

no disrespect to anyone here

Musical IQ is someone who knows what the real thing sounds like ...The actual live musical event and it sounds etc...no studio recorded crap only live recording 2 channel 2 track 2 mic recordings.....every musical instrument does sound different..... but they all fill that musical slot and you know its a trumpet etc...

From what i am reading on these forums there is way way to many measurement junkies that have no idea what the real live sound is or can even explain it...this probably is why there is not a REAL subjective review...Measurements are only so good ...truer tests are listening tests .....but i am all for not limiting FR or bandwidth in any part of the chain .....my speaker system will play from thirteen to hundred thousand cycles!

Now if tom wants to send me a pair to write a REAL subjective review ...I will

My background is all about the live event and musical sounds ...I know what real non amplified music sounds like..I attend several times a year including live college band music...I have helped with a friend do recordings of these live musical events....I would say that I have Musical IQ

As much as Bill is being obnoxious, you're not engendering yourself too well, either. I think you re-upped this request within the last couple months, too?

So, can we get back to talking about heatsink/chip/soldering misalignments and transformer mounting?

My vote for a new project would be Tom's take on a truly exceptional DAC that has balanced outputs and the ability for i2S connectivity. Why? Because I know Tom's design and engineering will mean it works, the build instructions mean that it'll be a doddle to put together, and if things go wrong, the support will be second to none.

I can't say that about any other DIY Dac I've seen.

You might want to be a bit careful with the wording there. You don't want to get written up as one of my cheerleaders. Apparently, that's bad... <snort>:D

On a more serious note, your request has been duly noted. I've only been mulling about designing a DAC for a good couple of decades now, so you can get an idea of the rate of progress here. While I won't make promises, I do agree that a DAC would fit nicely within my portfolio.

Lol - insults being thrown on the internet always makes me laugh - it's so easy to do from the comfort of a keyboard and knowing that the target of said insult isn't going to come over and smash your face in:D

However I stand by what I wrote - the well documented and evidenced approach is what attracted me to the Modulus in the first place. Granted I struggle to follow some of the measurement terms and technicalities (actually I get lost very quickly), but the scientific evidence was there to back up the claims. Reading your site and the various "Taming" articles (which are great for someone like me as they're written in a way that I can understand), and it's obvious that you know what you're doing, but more importantly can explain it in terms that people like me can understand.

There are other designs out there, but frankly they lose me, and when things go wrong, you're on your own (or get blinded by tech speak by someone who is trying to help, but can't put it into simple terms (or doesn't want to...)) And I'm dubious about amplifiers where the designers/developers are constantly parts swapping to make it sound different...

The Modulus build has gone like a dream, instructions easy to follow, you've answered the few questions I've had - what more does anyone want from a vendor selling a kit? Sadly that level of support/thoroughness isn't as common as you might imagine.

Now, where are my Pom Poms. And a one, a two, a one, two, three, four, "Give me a T....."

wow so your saying that you would smash my face if i said the above to you?

my writings are not insults and I resent that ...

turning to violence is not something i am cool with ...but if you insist I can give you my address come on over ...once you "smash my face in" you will be hearing from my lawyer...I do not take this lightly! its not funny really! and should be not tolerated:eek:

pm me for my address I dare you ;) :D

??!

Might be worth re-reading what was said, and realizing the colloquial nature of the language. It was poking fun of keyboard-heros that wouldn't necessarily say the same things to each others' faces, but given all you have is a wall of someone else's text, decorum tends to go a bit sideways. No physical threats were made.
