Reference DAC Module - Discrete R-2R Sign Magnitude 24 bit 384 KHz

I update dam1021 firmware to V1.06.
In the Play-mode Command mode, I typed "F6" (to change filter), then I entered in the uManager, I type "filters" to see the selected filter but nothing is shown.

I was able to see the selected filters in firmware V1.05.

Is it something missed ?

However, I am supplying the 3.3V from the Amanero. I've never used my Amanero's 3.3V power before, perhaps my PC's USB doesn't supply enough current for both the Amanero and the I2S isolation circuit? If this is indeed the case, and given how infrequently it happens, could I just drop a capacitor across the Amanero's 3.3V and GND pins? If so, what's a reasonable value?

My thinking wasn't too far off. The Amanero Application Note (page 5 of the documentation) shows using a 0.1uF between 3.3V and ground when used with an isolator. I didn't have a 0.1uF on hand, but I did try with a 1uF. That didn't help, unfortunately. Still get occasional loss of signal lock.

My current setup is a mess of wires on my desk. I'm currently using a 2x 8V transformer only for power (Hammond 185E16). Is it possible the transformer and/or AC lines are spraying some EMI that is affecting I2S signal integrity (between Amanero and dam1021)?

Alternatively, can I use the 3.3V header from J2 to power the I2S isolation circuit?

Answering my own question: no. I suspected that was the case, but glt's blog explains it nicely:

Note that the isolator works by having separate power supplies on each side: the clean side (which is the DAC) and the “dirty” side (which is the I2S source). In order to provide complete digital isolation – meaning “isolated power and ground”, the two supplies must be completely separate.
 
3)Tried both Extraputty and Teraterm, window opens, connection from board to computer is fine, but there seems to be no connection from Dac to board, as it is not possible to communicate with the Dac. Entering +++ doesn't appear on the screen. All settings are as they should be, Baud and so on. I checked it lots of times and tried numerous times to no avail.
Hence the thought that the board might be the culprit, and it is not terribly expensive to try another one. If a new one also fails, then Houston has a problem and it might be something embarrassing

Null Modem, so RX and TX must be swapped.

Only terminal emulation client I could get to work was Windows HyperTerminal (compatibility with the protocol), Putty has a version called ExtraPUTTY.

And the Oscar goes to.....TNT! And GavinB ! Crossing RX and TX; that was the reason, works like a charm now. But please, Sören, this should be part of the manual, as it would save hours and hours of research for non-computer nerds like me. I did not find this information anywhere in all the pages I've read; this awesome forum saved me.
A friend of mine is very much interested in this Dac, but is put off because of all the pitfalls at installation. He did not buy it, and maybe will not do because of that.
BTW the filters have much less impact than the power supply in my book....

I was playing with filters, interesting stuff. Sadly most of Pauls filters are not working with the new firmware, but there is the party pack and another pack posted in the filter brewing thread, enough no get me close to "filter comparison fatigue".

One more thing to be sure: I am planning to supply the Dac with shunts for all voltages.
Will it still work, when I replace the onboard 3.3V and +/-5V regulators with shunts? Don't need the output opamps.
 
No problem here, but out of experience it just sounds a lot better. Interesting comparison:

There is a reason that so many folks in this forum use those regs. To me it turns a very good device into an outstanding one.

if your not using opamps
all you need pre shift registers
is 1.2v and 3.3v
you can remove the 3.3v ldo and the 1.2v switcher and put in something of your choice


you could then remove 5v regs and feed the shift registers separate with +/- vref voltage which is natively +/- 4v

power is then no longer required at j1

Your ears know nothing until it is confirmed by the machines.

Funny how one would think the engineers job is to find out why something works? When someone detects something from an observation that may be contrary to the textbooks one would think the engineer would try to find a way to explain it. Not dismiss it because it goes against the accepted "best practice"?

How can one assume that because they cannot measure a parameter that it then does not exist? Of course, if one does not try something it would seem their view of scientific religion would preclude their making a pronouncement without anything to go on but their own experience which is not exclusively exemplary. I guess it saves one lots of work.

One would think this is how we move forward.

But if one is satisfied with what they are hearing is "good" that is fine but to assume that everyone else's experience is invalid, well, it does seem your warnings at the bottom of your posts are not universal, that is, they don't seem to apply to you, just everyone else.
