New Years Eve in Paris

Many good things already said; I'll try to avoid repeats.

A good point of view on Paris is to be found from the top of the Trocadero. The "Musée des monuments français" 's last level, dedicated to medieval frescoes' reproductions, is always empty, has amazing views on Paris and is a little gem on its own.

A charming place to wander a bit is the "Jardin du Palais Royal", behind "La Comédie Française".

Museums depend a lot on what you like. Pick according to your tastes and not according to "must see lists". Smaller museums like the Jacquemart André, the Luxembourg and the Marmottan Monet have often very good temporary exhibitions... but if the exhibitions are good, the queues are often long. It's a good idea to check their websites for online tickets to avoid most of those. If you're into Asian arts, I strongly second the Guimet.

Or the cemetery Pierre Lachaise (SP? ) near Trocadero where a lot of world famous people are buried. Another viewing of the world😊

"Père Lachaise". From the name of a Jesuit Father, confessor of Louis XIV.

Lovely place but could be a bit cold in December.

Btw, the Père Lachaise is in the East of Paris... you must have another cemetery in mind. Passy ?

Paris is a city to be walked, that is certain. I lived in Montmartre and Concord for years. Both great starting places for walks. Aside the hot tourist spots there are all sorts of little places to find by accident. Visit a street market and buy some food, that's the heart of Paris. And look for music, there will be plenty, large and small.

If you want to see the insides of museums, Scott's advice is best, get a pass. Winter isn't a big time for tourists, but Christmas - New Year are packed. Usually with Italians. 🙂

The Left Bank Latin Quarter at St. Michel was always a big, drunken scene on the night of the 31st. To be enjoyed if you are young, avoided if you are not. Fireworks are usually at the Eiffel tower. I did the 1999-2000 night there, which was madness. Usually a lot more sane.

Hey Pano, I remember we talked of a street of the 10 or 11° arrt if I remember where you lived as well (or had a shop ?) : very "parisian" place 🙂

the good news is the winter here seems not cold at all, I was friday at Pantheon, St Michel then to the Halles by feet to see Star Wars... maybe 15/17° C. very rare ! I don't know in ten days but it seems the autumn and beginning of the winter is more and more nice, global warming effect !

Sounds like fun, any French punk/oi bands?

you will laugh... but yes sometimes ! And it was the punk side of it also when you know the quality of french music..😱

It was unique because the music was like the feeling : without coherence or logic : very pirate place, deeply rock'n roll in the spirit (not because guys were in black leather suits with Harleys motorbikes), but more because it was in this little town at night one of the latest open bar on street after 2 am where you could see a rasta sitted near a dandy sitted near a student sitted near a bag packers from USA or aussie and also many bad guys & girls in the midlle of all of that 🙂 with some punks, black and arabians guys, etc all mixed and drunked as it was always the last bar after many before 😀

Music jumped from what I said to UK one, etc ! Strange when you jumped from a Joy Division to a Clash to an old song from St germain des Pres to the Cure then back to La souris Deglingué (LSD 😉 )... then to Public Image Limited, then Elvis... like if it was the worst dj of the world for the transition between two tracks... very unique, never saw a place like that anywhere, just full with 40 people inside ! If I opened a bar, I will do exactly like that... Now in Paris many night bars are the same with sad planar, etc... Although I don't know anymore now what is fun as I'm not 20 anymore 😉.... But I'm seeing many places now without savor which try to have "ce je ne sais quoi"... at least for my tastes ! Paris has not the London or Berlin feeling when nightclubbing...

Well I assume that the nights are even harder to know when you are a stranger in a place... There are no Lonely Planet Survey guides for the deviled nights all other the towns of the world !

I believe the Metro is free after 5 pm on New Year's eve, but don't know how long it runs.
We've done New Year's in Paris 4 or 5 times. Would recommend avoiding the Champs Elysee as the soccer hoodlums are pretty gassed up on the bubbly as the bewitching hour arrives and the police mirandize them with their batons.

Yes my bad - Cimetière de Passy IS near Trocadero. BTW I support to include Trocadero in the trip - very nice place to look at the city including a nice view of the Eiffel tower (if you can't get up), nice cafés all around including heated outdoor places.

He didn't say he had 3 months for the trip, but 3 days 😉

🙂

Absolutely ! Saying to someone to see the Père Lachaise in 3 days or go to Chartres is the advice of someone who trolls ! Even thinking to see both Musee du Louvre & Orsay in 3 days (but the night) is the worst advice I read but if you want to see Nothing of Paris but those two places in front of each others with the river in between which is a little aera. I'm always surprise to see most of the time the turists glued in the same place with few walking, as if they always took the tube to make it easier (walking, are you crazy 😀) or faster (which is a non sense as the places are close if you organise your walk)

I believe all the plan made in advance will be delayed when they will be on the floor of Paris. That's why I gave some walk paths as reading here most of the people has not so many sense : just a collection of place like inputs on a shop with no spirit to link up the place between them ! As I writted : a digital, engineer point of view but Paris is not like that : She is analogic : the path between monuments and aera is a part of a whole and same things ! There are few place like that in the world and I believe that's why people here are making a list like they do when they visit some places in some others towns where there is an aesthetic desert between those place ! Not the case in the feeling of Paris !

For instance : Trocadéro and Effeil Tower ! Of course when you saw one, the other is just in front of, impossible to miss it or not wanting to see it! Of course better to go by feet from Trocadéro to 16° or to Effeil Tower to Les Invalides, etc,

Those walks can be made in 3 days but if you loose the time just in the museum (but if it's your dream to see paintings you ever dreamed to see), you will miss the main part of what Paris is ! But after all everybody is free to scale their own priorities after readings the advices 🙂 !

By the way for the nights and NYD, many things dépends about the hostel place !

When Arriving in Paris if not bought yet : get a large map of Paris to walk !

Check the weather just before fulling the suitcases !

And enjoy 😎, if never went to Paris, I think you will have a beautifull shared souvenir with wife.(Just don't judge please the french cooking with what you will eat in Paris 😉 , flee the bakery where the cakes are clones between each othersn flee Paul Bakeries, enter in cheese shops between two walkings 🙂 , buy a baguette and make sandwichs during the day 🙂 )

good trip !

BTW I prepare a trip to Cordoba but I will ask to locals 🙂

AH Jacco I recognize your old pirate style 😉

Yes, La Madeleine monument near la place de l'Etoile : fine food shopps aera around it of course, you can find also caviar shops, eat oysters, buy foie gras and delicate food : Fauchon, Petrossian, etc....and the ladys are around the side of rue Vignon... But the shops are open all the year !

More typical to look les vieilles puttes at rue St Denis... very typical like the red quarter in your capital ! Tu connais Lily la Tigresse ? (Les tontons flingueurs movie 😉 )

Btw, I was asking myself where was the grave of the american solder in Paris ?? Is it in the american ambassy aera, I believe to know paris Inside/outside pretty well but never saw this grave. I believe it should be very stirring.
