A few days ago, someone posted a link to a site /article re: getting rid of the Windows 10 nag screen etc.

Can someone post a link to the post ?

Thanks

I can explain what to do....

Look in (controlpanel , system & security) the installed updates for KB3035583 and deinstall it.
next, request to look for new updates. KB3035583 will be in that list again.
Now right-click on KB3035583 and "hide" the update.

Last night's W10 update converted all my PDF files to a new Windows browser version.

Yes, On Windows 10 pdf files can be read by the Edge browser. So if you don't have Adobe Reader installed, then Edge will be the default pdf reader.

But the files aren't converted, you just have to set the default program back to Adobe Reader. After that all icons will revert to their previous look.

Now here's a question that someone might know the answer to.

I've bought a cheapie Windows 7 laptop - it was cheap because it has Windows 7 Polish variety.

Will I be able to do the free upgrade to Windows 10 and will that convert the OS to English ?

The upgrade itself will not change the language. But after the upgrade, you can go to the control panel and change the default language to English. Windows 7 does not allow you to change language, unless it's an Ultimate or Enterprise version. But as soon as you're on Windows 10, you can change the language to whatever you want.

I hope you speak Polish... hehe 😀

My W10 system was the usual upgrade from W8.1 which of course had Adobe Reader installed. I'm thinking that Edge gets associated with PDF's regardless.

It depends on the version of Adobe reader. Adobe DC is Windows 10 ready, as soon as you start Adobe DC it will ask if you want to make Adobe the default pdf reader. If you say yes, things will go back to normal.

But the older versions may not do that. So it can be necessary to change it manually, if you insist on using Adobe reader 10 or 11.

Which will still download W10 to your system...

There have been that many twists and turns to all this......

I did clean install W8.1 around 4 weeks ago and these are the updates to avoid. I compiled this list myself by checking each KB number once I got to the 2015 updates.

Important... updates to avoid related to W10.

KB3083711 (there is a question mark over this one)
KB3087041

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And although I'm embarrassed to admit this after all I've said over W10, I've just converted an old W7 pro license into W10 pro and clean installed that onto a new SSD.

And I'm really liking it, in particular 'Edge'.

One thing while I remember.

For anyone experiencing slightly 'softened', 'fuzzy', 'blurry' (or whatever you want to call it) text on certain installed programs such as LTspice etc then the fix is simply. Navigate to the program files (or in some cases even the programs icon) and set the application launcher it to 'disable scaling on high DPI settings'.

I found LT, Audacity and Ashampoo Burning Studio needed this on my set up which uses 125% scaling to make everything less microscopic.

I can confirm that, as well. This system had the latest greatest Adobe reader on it when it was upgraded, but since Edge was intercepting every implicit call for Adobe reader, it never had a chance to reassert itself.

Thanks.

I just looked at the update history to find that MS rammed 28 updated down my Ethernet cable and into my PC without my action, or permission. Some of

For my laptop, I snapped the retainer clip off the ethernet cable plug to make it easy to pull it out a few mm, breaking the connection. On the desktop I use an ethernet switch for the same thing. I always take if off-line when the computer sits idle or sleeps and make it a rule not to boot connected - I learned from an old firewall I had that there's a lot being sent and received while waiting for the UI to come up.

that's where the rubber meets the road err internet , BTW isn't that where MS captures / mines most of the data.

Windows 10 Doesn't Stop Spying You, Even After Disabling It's Creepy Features - The Hacker News

It seems Cortana and live tiles do most of the spying.

Ars-Technica did independent tests.
Even when told not to, Windows 10 just can?t stop talking to Microsoft | Ars Technica

"As part of delivering Windows 10 as a service"
Short of me hacking Cortana , live tiles and the update/WAT out of this OS ,
(which I have done to truly evaluate it) ... this is what we have.

Further reading (and monitoring) , shows live tiles even using unsecured
connections. wow ! A more bloated marketing based product that trades
privacy /security for data mining and profit.

I'll be a laughing when numerous exploits overtake this new OS.

PS - this W10 "debacle" has at least helped me negate those last
W7 "attack surfaces" - a positive improvement.
