TPA3116D2 Amp

Are you looking for an economical PS for the new TPA3251D2 thread that is gearing up? I wonder how these compare to the TDA7298's which are already available as full boards for $11? I have four right now and am quite happy with them.

3252 not for the 8ohm speaker users. Unfortunately. Looking at the graphs output power differences between the 2/4/8 ohms are worlds apart. More for the AVI users than pure audio brigade.
 
For the folks who prefer cheap notebook/laptop power supply bricks, please see the attached reports of units that may fail or have the risk of electric shock/fire/hazard..

Just if you want to know, if your $6 supply is safe.. :headshot:

For all those, the main problems are:

The transformer insulation is not sufficient. The clearance distances between the primary and
secondary windings are not sufficient.

There can be an electrical discharge with a dangerous energy level for the user when disconnecting
the product from the mains socket through contact with the plug pins.

The electrical insulation is not sufficient.

The insulation distance between the primary and secondary circuits is not sufficient. The primary circuit
conductors are not fitted with any additional shielding, but are simply soldered in place. If the
connections failed, the insulation distances might be reduced and/or electrical arcing might be caused.

The electrical insulation is not sufficient. The cross sectional area of the conductors in the mains cable
is insufficient. There is no fuse in the plug leaving the cable unprotected.

The primary and secondary windings can make contact and reduce creepage and clearance distances.
Insulation on the transformer is inadequate and does not provide protection against electric shock. The
fuse in the plug is inadequate.

Clearance/creepage distances in the mains transformer between the primary and secondary windings
are not sufficient. Due to this defect, the user can receive an electric shock from the accessible output
connector in case of a fault in the product.

Please note, these are only units that were tested and mostly came in a retail package (blister or papercard). So i suspect many more "not safe" units out there, esspecially when not made for retail. But, as always, you get what you pay for. 🙂

Can't agree with this more. Cheap SMPSes can be dangerous, there's several stories out there of people getting electrocuted by counterfeit iphone chargers and such.

If you're going the laptop supply route, hit up a thrift store and look for old laptop/printer/whatever adapters with name brands. If it's a genuine Dell/HP/Gateway/IBM/Acer/whatever adapter, it's a safe, verified design.
 
It's one saving grace, I suppose for the 8 ohms is its much lower thd at 10W and under.

I am not arguing. That's my interpretation. Opinions differ.

Just as many like to use the bricks for cheapness, yet I use linear bi-polar with common gnd supply fitted with an anti surge. Many, if not most suffer from initial power surges, yet the cure for most is to use anti pop circuit.

Personal preference.
