...am I wrong in thinking that he is selling a (very pretty) first-order shelving lowpass filter for $500? ...I found the description he gave of the principal of operation to be largely incorrect.
Yes, that seems to be the case. And another case of Steve's flowery prose.

hi guys,
i also took interest in the decware version of this driver. out of my budget as well. guess i shouldn't say that, as i could afford it, if it apeared to be worth it. after reading about it my initial thought was... why not just use an equalizer??? a really good one of course.
any thoughts on going that route?
peace

I've already done that....and I really like it! Since my system is ported (43 litre, 4" port with 7" flares, 9" long), it's a little tricky to equalize it properly indoors. If you use a LR BSC circuit, then equalize from say...300Hz to 20kHz, it works really well. Imaging is amazing, and the soundstage is really big. Cheers!
Hello,
did any one acctualy tried the Dayton PS220-8 8" driver?
FS of 37Hz is acctualy impresive, on the other hand the curve is quite unstable and the driver fluctuates with a rate of 35db beween 75db at 37HZ to 110db at 4kHz.
Never the less I would like to know how he really performes
After listening to Fostex, Alpair, TangBand, Sonido, Seas, Lowther and many others I bought a pair without listening. To make them sound linear and sweet was tough but after all I was rewarded with a very intimate and sweet sound. IMHO: They are by far the best 8" fullrange drivers out there. My second choice are the 2 TangBand drivers (W8-1772 & W8-1808). TB & Dayton are lightyears ahead of Lowther & Fostex. The new TangBand W8-2145 has treble issues! If you want the real life-live sound of the instruments in your home Lowther, Seas & Fostex are a no go.
The Daytons have it all: True bass, full bodied sound, realistic gestalt, open and sweet highs (BTW, much better than my AirMotionTransformers!). From Techno to ancient music they do it all. Symphonic music is not overwhelming with them but impressive. Vocals sound fantastic. The Daytons sound definitely better with T-Amps (2020 or TPA3116) then with Tube. Normal transistor amps do sound sick and with the Daytons even more so. The Daytons have extremely low distortion and you will hear it, in the highs they have not more distortion than the AirMotions! Most tweeters have more distortion and we are talking fullrange here - respect! These are some serious fullrangers. I had them in BR enclosures, will put them in a horn. They gave me endless hours of joy.

Yeah, imaging is really lifelike.

A passive LCR filter with quality parts will do sound better than DSP and much better than an Equalizer.
Klang & Ton arealso one of those with a tendency to add filters to FRs that are more complicated than some amplifiers… makes me suspect of anything they do.

I totally agree with you, but don't tell it to Bob Brines😀
BTW did you hear audio nirvana 8"? they looks very similar to daytones

Yes but I can't really tell if they were good or not cos the equipment they used was so bad....
I guess the Daytons are better and by far cheaper.
Klang & Ton (most selling DIY speaker magazine on this planet) stated endless times over the last 10 years that passive parts are better than DSP. And they have MUCH more experience than Bob Brines.

You can't be farther away from the truth. Hobby-HIFI is the magazine with the complicated filters. The philosophy of Klang & Ton is: Try to use the fullranger without any correction and if you must, use minimum filtering so the character of the fullrange is not compromised.

Low distortion, and you throw a class D at them with those nasty distortion profiles? Right smack in the middle where these kind of drivers have their weak points anyways? Yay. 😉

Are you saying the driver has nasty distortion profiles or class D amps have nasty distortion profiles?

Well I could not find a distrotion measurement on the driver but let's believe it's in the 0.5% range claimed to be very good. In this case a class D adds 0.1-0.2% in the 5-10k range, that is significant in my reading and I would not call that a transparent amp... If you sum those you are getting close to 1% wich should be audible. Also class Ds tend to have higher level of odd order distortion.
What class D amp are you using? The TPA3116D2 when used below 25w has very low distortion. I am very sensitive to HD and can perceive -45dB on Klippel distortion test so I know. All of my measurements of speakers and the best that have -55dB HD (at 1m 1kHz and 98dB) do not have any issue with the TPA3116 "adding" any disortion.
I'm sorry to say but the datasheet shows more than 0.1% from 3-7k with a 8 Ohm load at 1-5W. I'm using an AB, without a flame class D is just not there yet.
Sure class AB like mod86 have insane low levels of HD. Most speakers are not better than 0.1% HD so you are not going to hear (to any appreciable effect) 0.1% added by the amp.
Possibly not. Probably not in fact. Although it somewhat underlines my dislike of THD. No issue with HD measures, but a total sans the individual levels doesn't really tell you anything useful. Other than possibly that an amp with vanishingly low distortion probably has a shed-load of negative feedback which can bring with it its own issues (depending on implementation).
Either way, it's a somewhat moot point as 'Horntube' appears to have been banned some time ago. 😉

So did you ever get around to building the horn for your Dayton Audio PS 220-8 drivers? How does it sound to the (BR) boxes? Jeff
