I am trying to make a portable Bluetooth boombox but can't find an amplifier that will work. I have four 8 ohm 20W speakers and one 4 ohm 30W sub. I want to power the amplifier using a 12V battery. I want to use a 2.1 stereo amplifier but I can't find one that will meet these specs. I want to stay as cheap as possible. I am new to audio electronics and could use some help. Anyone have a good idea for an amplifier I could use? Thanks.
will this amplifier work for this project and still provide quality sound. Mini Hi Fi High Power 2 1 DC10 18V Digital Amplifier Board 15W 2 30W Class D | eBay
you could run 2 of your 8 ohm drivers per channel and run them in parallel to achieve 4 ohms per channel. parts express sells a few 2.1 amplifier boards as well as a few different types of bluetooth adapters. im in the hunt for something similar and havent found much for options. hopefully someone else can chime in with some ideas.

I usually use given-for-free car head-units, some incorporating a tape player or a cd. SMPS power supply works for me...at home 🙄
But you need to fiddle inside to change something, sometimes...
I also play with the VLP ( very low power ) old little 2.1 systems that have the tiny 16 DIP amplifiers...1 W per channel, 3 W in BTL configuration.
Not the Logitech monsters that have HUGE power available on board !
Those systems I described use old linear amplification, though it's rather inefficient compared to the digital class D, as most power goes into heat.
Now we talk about speakers: those make the sound we hear, so the game
is there. The question when making a portable battery powered system is:
what is the desired headroom ( deciBel, SPL, crest factor and many more if you concern the sound ) and for how long ? 🙄😕

This is what I planned on doing. I have everything I need for the project except the amplifier
This doesn't run at 12V DC. Thank you though.
tpa3116 is a nice amp.
idk if you will be happy with the crossover on the suggested module.
for a first attempt you should try a fullrange speaker imo.
Visaton BG20 is really nice driver for 25€: high spl, nice bass.
i added a piezo tweeter (monacor 5€ piezos are most similar to the original motorolas) parallel to the woofer, with a simple 1uF cap in series with the tweeter.
best improvement for the bg20.
but you won't need that from the beginning.
a real multiway system needs a bit more knowledge imo.
i had only one bg20 in a described cabinet with me a few weeks ago in the park (it was with a tpa3316 board i modded to mono).
a guy stopped and asked where the music is coming from.
he couldn't believe that that simple box was everything.
he told me he had built several mobile boomboxes with car audio stuff before, but never got a result like this.....he should have heard my big outdoor party machinery!!!

I have a couple of these. Simple, but they work..

Close. CSR8635. Actually got no idea why it's the 35 version but I guess the modules are bought bulk. Could easily be the 30 version on other amps.

I picked up a welling centre speaker for $15, added a ta2024 amp, 12 18650 cells in 3 parallel x 4. I added a 2.4gig (non Bluetooth) RX.
I put the 2.4 TX in a small enclosure which has 6 18650s (2 parallel =, string of 3) added a 5v dc-dc, a small mp3/sd/radio combo, 2 Bluetooth RX and 2 line inputs and designed a 5 channel mixer with an extra 5 momentary push buttons which monitor each input to a headphone amp.
Beach party mixups will be on soon. 2 ppl connect phones with BT, 2 with line and someone can mix it up. Cost less than $100

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

The small box also has a line output so it can connect wired to a home amp etc without needing the big speaker box
This is a crude schematic of the pushbutton headphone input monitor. Relays were too expensive and bulky and I had SPST installed. I used a relay to 5 inputs.
The IC and opamps are showing only 1 channel but is mirrored.

I use a TPA3116 in a boombox at 13v and it works fine. I can turn on a step-up converter to make it 24v, but it only makes the boombox play a little louder with out distorting. This doesn't run at 12V DC. Thank you though.
Sure. But in my case I have a high gain 36 dB. When using 24 v i can turn my phone more up, before the amp starts clipping.Yeah, more voltage only makes sense with speakers that can output high SPL without distortion.
In practice i can turn my Iphone 1 or 2 levels up higher when using 24v instead of 13 v.
Yay, so your speakers are not that efficient then. (I guess)
I'm running a pair of Beyma 8AG/N at 26dB, when having the iphone at max-2, the cabinet is putting out some 124dB at 20V.
Anyway, nice build. 🙂
