With a 120dB dynamic hearing range, it doesnt take very many mixes and combining channels, layering etc from digital recording techniques to be within audibility (<100dB dynamic range) unless great care is used in applying digital designs.

This is such absolute nonsense.

Yes, if you sit in a top notch anechoic chamber and let yourself acclimate for 20 minutes, you can hear as low (at 1kHz) as about 20 micro pascals (0 dB SPL) which is the threshold of hearing, and from there up to the threshold of pain.

BUT YOU CAN'T DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

The INSTANTANEOUS dynamic range of human hearing (such as when we're listening to music, which is the only context that's germane to this discussion) is only around 60-70 dB, not 120 dB.

Gaudi's house designs are just fine if you your thing is to act as a dwarf from Snow White or some such fable character. While amusing as a design excercise, I'd never want to live in one of them.

Then you wouldnt like my house either. Though it isnt like Gaudi, it is 'different' all right. I had many people... real-estate, contractors and strangers say it is very nice and unique but wouldnt necessarily be their taste or comfort zone. I had a real-estate appraiser spend a month and came back with zero. said he could not put a price on it... there was nothing comparable to it. Its all just an art project. But no need to be sorry about what one likes or doesnt like.

While looking that one up --- that isnt the point.... rather to avoid internal limiting of the dynamic range via digital processes --- noise and/or artifacts (distortion). Dont worry about it.... just like the removal of LP and CD produces lower over-all system distortion...... .... didnt get that either. Sorry.

Not necessarily so, Richard. I may not love Gaudi's style, but who's to say I wouldn't like yours? A little nuts may be just fine, I just don't like his style of a little nuts.

"Different" may be just fine if it reflects your state of mind. You never know until you experience it.

Stands to reason for me. Less between me and the source, good by default, less processing, less variables, should mean less source signal degradation.

If you are that strapped you cannot afford the music either, so you make your own and get the ultimate quality.

All you need is enough headroom at each stage to avoid needing to know all the dynamic range tricks that early DSP app notes stressed.

Yes, this is my experience too with miniDSP 2x4.
Headroom and where to look for problems when exceeding the limits, was the No.1 issue for me.
You may look at post #5, #9, #10 before the fix of the software plug-in bug and posts #24 to #30 after the fix applied by the minDSP devteam.

Maybe the cheapest miniDSP is not the best example

I started using it as a learning tool for practicing the DSP path and as a flexible workbench for loudspeaker modifications.
I am still with it after some years, using it as the core of my –always changing at the speaker side-audio system.

For a two channel system, I don’t think I need something more advanced


I realize their app note giving filter coefficients to 10 or 12 decimal places seems a little ambitious.

Which is the relationship btn bit depth and decimal place for double-precision signed arithmetic data?

I find this correct. The high level stimulus raises the low level detectability threshold.
Environmental noise would too narrow the range by ~30dB.
Subtract another 20dB-30dB due to Tinnitus :mad: and what’s left? :D
