''men that went on the moon were affected by the experience''
The question is not what it gave these men but what it signifies for humanity.
because putting a man on the moon , strictly speaking, economically speaking, brought absolutely nothing.
it has costs money, men died, cost lots of time and effort, polluted air,we brought back no money or ressources, discovered almost nothing, etc.
but it brought dreams, confidence in our means, helped developped new technology, and is a proof of what team effort can bring us to,gave birth to all sort of movies, etc.
So in the end, it is tough to say if it was worth it....
the most important thing i think it brought is it opened our eyes to a whole new world, and we realised how small we really are and at the same time how powerful we also are.
so now by looking at the stars, it has brought introspection.
and now it s time to work togheter, or else...humanity will fail, intoxicated, enslaved

We can't be trusted! Look at history. Do you think the last few pages of this thread have not been contemplated and anecdotally discussed exactly the same way many times over and over for millennia? The only difference is the pool of knowledge keeps getting larger, to our detriment. Problems just get more complex and the answers more distant. This entire thread confirms this. We are on the verge of destroying the planet. Global warming is nothing but a smoke screen. Global warming is a result of our consumption of the planet. It can't be remedied as long as we continue to populate the planet at this rate. 9 billion by 2050. That's right around the corner. The last thing I want is a collective joy ride into outer space! Anyone here heard of Agenda 21? Yes, the problem is not with the stars, it's with us. More precisely, 'in' us, individually, not collectively except by incidence. You want to change the world? Change your own heart and attitude and you have. Free will? More like defiance.
maybe you dont know it, but you and i are friends 😉
We need to protect the earth,
However the sun has a limited life, the earth itself is evolving.
A species locked to one planet is doomed.
What about the animals birds and other life on the earth, are they going to evolve and become intelligent.
Can you see a world with talking creatures in the future?
How would they view us if they became intelligent in the future?
The world is ours by default.?.
What if by some strange happening another creature became more intelligent than us? Lets have a bit of fun lets say a virus! or something small!
Oups cyber dyne systems biological computer..connected to some form of life..
LOL..perhaps the story of the day the earth stood still is more important than we think..a race of peace keeping robots..controlling us..(protecting the planet) 😀

Just for fun,

But then again we control all breeding so its not likely to happen is it?

I think with all the banter regarding how relatively limited our knowledge actually is, it seems then pretty presumptuous of us to declare by default that it is adequate to conclude our existence is a mere random occurrence. Whether it be to the dismissal of God or another one of us. However,... anything but politics and religion. But I don't think the involvement of God in this vein has anything to do with religion.
Have you seen the price of moon rocks lately?because putting a man on the moon , strictly speaking, economically speaking, brought absolutely nothing.
........The world is ours by default.?./QUOTE]
If we go by old epics and some recent discoveries of ancient artifacts , there were intelligent beings on this planet over 10,000 to 30,000 years ago. Us humans were quite primitive at that time.
So who's planet is this ? Ours or theirs ?
They left long ago AND said "they will be back !"
Will we still claim it's OUR planet and try and "KILL" them ?
Hmmm.......most likely ! 😱

You've been watching too much of the crazy curly haired Greek "scientist" on the SYFI channel.😉
pidesd, I disagree.
(1)We learned a great deal. Does knowledge hold no value?
(2) There are many technological advances as direct outcome of the 'space race'.

Yes, something similar , along with my🙂

Sweep back the clouds of earth..
Something that "Exists" outside of the galaxy and the universe..outside of infinity...outside of the multiverse...outside of reality as we understand it.
Possibly not made of energy or matter..outside of all dimensions..
That does not exist somewhere in space and time..that might have purpose.
Its back to the same problem as "what is the universe expanding into"..where does it exist?
Its obvious that things are not quite what they seem!

Well pondering 'what ifs' and such don't necessarily command answers. Make-believe is just that, nothing more. Has it occurred to you that it may not be expanding into anything at all? It seems the more hypothesizing there is going on, the less postulating there is. Entertaining answers to hypothetical questions results in a circle game. You always end up where you started. So that could very well be the answer to your question. This could be a Truman show. To then postulate that the other side is another Truman show and so on is just futile imagination.
Make-believe is just that, nothing more. Has it occurred to you that it may not be expanding into anything at all?
So you do not believe the big bang happened?
Ie there is no start to the universe as we know it..and the red shift does not mean the galaxies are moving away from each other?
Also the CMB has no meaning..and the Higgs has no relevance.. Particle duality has no relevance..I don't think CERN would agree with make believe.
If you don't think its expanding then you would have to accept the idea of infinity. (How many dimensions would infinity have? M-theory says possibly 11)
I would agree that it could expand into itself..however that would assume an outer edge..so we are back to the same question ie where is the universe.

I don't believe in the big bang theory. I think we will never be able to fully understand what is actually happening. At least not for a very long time.
We have too few inputs and some functions of the universe are beyond our understanding for which we will eventually have to coin new vocabulary......but it will be never ending !
Somebody dealing with AI once said that " No machine can understand itself fully " . And man is a machine ! The corollary would be " And cannot fully understand it's surroundings either " ! QED.
But this will keep us occupied for a long long time ! Trust the Single Malt will not run out ! 😀

as i said, technological advancements give nice toys. and knowing more about astronomy helps us positioned ourselves relative to the universe.
And the more we look the more we know; the more we know we actually know little as humans, and that we have to question our decisions and approaches to problems.
Sometimes, we have to realisr tha our impulsive needs are not always what is best.
and right now we have to realise that humanity is going into a dead end if we dont adress fundamental problems in our SOCIETIES, such as corruption, which is rotting the entire planet.
Corruption= thinking for our own little selves..me myself and i, and i dont want to hear others and let me alone.
by actually doing those, we enslave ourselves in our own mind and fail to gully realise ourselves and define ourselves.
The light at the end of the tunnel that i see comes from internet, which permits to pass knowledge very quickly to anyone instantaneously.
(2)
yes, progress towards space exploration
Have you seen the price of moon rocks lately?
that touches another interesting topic...
i personally think such emblem of such significance should be in a museum or such...that it that allllllll, for everyone to admire.
because getting those rocks is a prowess of a nation, not an individual;
everyone should feel proud..IMO
As are many valuable works of art, etc. Public and private.that touches another interesting topic...

Why are those exclusive?because getting those rocks is a prowess of a nation, not an individual;
Oh, I guess they're not.everyone should feel proud..IMO

I wouldn't use the term machine for a human being. A machine
is a man made object with a certain function. A human being is a
person with a free will (Cogito, ergo sum.), an incredibly
sophisticated creature.
Artificial inteligence can never understand itself because it is
not a sentient being(person), only a programmed machine.
Big bang theory sounds logical.

Oh, I guess they're not.
can you elaborate a bit on your view of things?
it seems you are not of my opinion(i'm not sure), but i do not understand your point.
every opinion has the right to be clear and be talked about.
