Why not just use a panels of wives, fresh from the kitchen, they are obviously the best test subjects:
Firstly they are not audiophiles and secondly they do seem to be able to pick up any changes in sound quality that hubby's minor mod has achieved.

I started with a group of listeners without any special qualifications but this was apparently not good, they need to be trained and selected on their ability.
I am teaching, testing and rejecting the non talented.

So your test results only say what a carefully selected group perceives, and are therefore pretty meaningless for the rest of us.

Around here, the comparison is between tide and mist...... 🙂

Or foggy or murkey. Waiting for delivery of a tube preamp; it uses 12AU7's , so a friend immediately suggested I should instead use 12BH7's I already have as spares for an amp . I understand the idea of tube rolling same make/ different maker tubes. But there's no guarantee the current draw or voltage requirements will be met by the preamp, and if it does sound better, doesn't that mean it's a poorly designed circuit? Or does better mean acting as a tone control?
To me it would make sense that the designer modeled his circuit to include a particular tube.
I'm still fairly new to tubes, am I wrong? Does compatible mean the same?
I have no wish to burn up a new preamp's transformer.

Hi,

I'm still fairly new to tubes, am I wrong? Does compatible mean the same?
I have no wish to burn up a new preamp's transformer.

Provided the preamp is up to it often a 12BH7A en lieu of a 12AU7 will be an improvement.
To take full advantage of it the original circuit may need some minor optimizations though.
I suggest you start a thread in the appropriate place when you're ready for it.

Cheers, 😉

A group shower is a small price to pay for enlightenment.

Convertibles are the parallel of esoteric audio.
Here, owners of soft top roadsters are old and bald in most cases, or banana flavor.
Ripe for the picking by fruit merchants.

(More the removable hard top type myself. I can definitely vision myself cruising on 37.5 mph speed limit Caribbean roads in a Lambo Silhouette/Jalpa classic, if not for all the trap holes present)
