TPA3116D2 Amp

Well, I've done that a couple of weeks ago. About 10 audiophiles where visiting and I had my 300b fired up, together with my 6SN7 pre. What nobody knew, was that the 300b's where not playing, but the TPA3116D2 hidden somewhere.

At the end, I off course told them and everybody was really surprised.

I would not go that far, that the TPA plays nicer that my 300b's, but it comes close.

Curiosity demands that I ask, which amp board, and what power supply?

I have had an original YJ Black board on my work bench for several months, but would hesitate to compare it to some of the 300B's I've heard. For that matter, I like my KT88 SET amp better than the YJ board, but the little Class D amp is very very good in it's own right.....
danke,

John

I would be surprised if anyone claimed that the TPA3116 outperformed a well executed 300B SET design or any other high end tube amp for that matter. No one will argue that the performance-to-cost ratio for these TI Class D amps is incredible. With a high quality power supply and any necessary upgrades/mods, these amps can handle main system amplification duties without shame, and not break the bank. The low DC voltage power requirements makes it an ideal and somewhat safe platform for those entering DIY audio. Even Bottlehead has jumped into the game with their Quicksand TPA31xx-based Class D amp.

Well, if measured performance (THD, noise level, damping factor etc.) is the yard stick, I am confident that the TPA3116 will beat a tube power amp. However, if subjective hearing is the "yard stick", then there is no yard stick. Different people like different flavours. Some of my audiophile friends only listen to 300B amps and no others because they claim 300B portrait human voice best, with lots of "air". After all, all that matter is whether one like the sound.

What about well regarded MOSFET output stage class A designs like an F5 et al? How do they sound compared to a well executed TPA31xx? The problem is, anyone with an F5 won't listen to TPA31xx, or admit to it anyhow. I have never heard one nor a 300B so I can't compare.

Its a good question and I was wondering too. My main system has a Mini Aleph which is in the same family as the F5. However I have not done any comparisons as its in a multi-way with a MiniDSP crossover and I couldn't be bothered mucking around with levels etc to compare. Also I must admit I never thought I would even consider using the 3116 in that system but as my 3116 evolves I am thinking a comparison is overdue.

A 3 way comparison with my Aleph, 3116 and Tubelab Simple SE would definitely be worth the effort at some stage.

danke,

The black/blue board. Würth coils and russian PIOs at the input. Powered by a good quality laptop supply.

The 300Bs are DIY, but the schematics is from Reinhard Thörress, as is all the iron that he wound for me. I changed the circuit slightly, using a CSS for the output tubes.

I am very new to this, but have done much reading in the last couple of days, but am a little confused and would like some help please:

I am looking at the Audiobah green board ....

I am looking to add a JY 6N3 pre amp at some time, with the Russian tubes, but at the start, am I able to just put a Volume Pot connected directly to the board with no pre amp ?

This seems to be done on the blue/black board here Yuan Jing Audio - TPA3116 Class-D 2.0 Stereo Power Amplifier [50W+50W] - $115.00 - Class-D & T

Is it just a 50K pot any special spec (liner/log or something, no idea what that means) ?

Would something like this also work ? 6CH Remote Motor Alps Volume Potentiometer Control Adjust 50K 6 W Remote | eBay

Are there other good remote control options, found several others but no where near this simplicity or price, and if the pot is no good can always replace if needed, not really looking for multiple inputs ?

I got one of those, and you need another little board with some relays for the channel switching. That board doesnt come with the kit. I made myself a board for a similar kit, that would work with this kit, it needs a little tweaking. But If you only need it as volume control with a remote, that it would be fine, of course for that price forget about a true ALPS pot.

Thanks, and you connected it directly to the blue/black or green amp ok ?

Were you happy with the sound/quality from the included pot ?

It would almost seem to defeat the purpose of buying a genuine ALPS pot for $30+ it would almost be highest cost part of the whole project 😕

YES..
I made this box with the pot Rhing suggested. I am listening to it now with the new Sure TPA3110 15w 8ohm board I recently received. Not sure 50K is the correct value pot for your board, but it sounds great on every TPA board I have tried including this one!

That one I still havent tried yet fully, I did with a similar versión, and the SQ was good, but was a quick test for a boom box project that I still havent finished.

Yes, you can conect it directly to the amp, but it needs some power supply... I can't remember If its 12v or 5v

I am about to send off a Digi-Key order so I can begin modding my two stock YJ boards that I have been using for about 9 months now. A friend and a family member after hearing them want me to make them one but do not think I will have the time to make my mods and theirs.

So my question: is the consensus still that the Ybdz green board sounds the best in its stock form? Or is there another I missed in the thread?

I don't believe there is something like 'dirty power', not in it's source!
Regular “clean” power enters homes, buildings, and offices at 50-60 Hz. The increased use of electrical power overloads electrical grid base, which distributes the power. Power is “dirty” or polluted when it contains the high frequency signals flowing through overloaded wires, and not just clean 50-60 Hz power.
You better invest in a good power filter conditioner and do not run to many gears at the moment when you run one little board/amplifier and the source of music. Replace inductors for a better ones, or you will never end up modifying
and spending bags of money for fancy caps (that will do nothing to 'clean' the power!) 😉

Norway has apparently an antiquated way of grounding the electricity in houses. I was told it was like every house just had a stick in the ground.
