So, last Saturday i had the opportunity to listened to Rogers LS5/9, the system comprised of full QUAD CDP, PRE & AMP.
The speakers are enjoyable to listen to, we set it up around 2.4m between speakers, 40cm from the front wall and around 60cm from the side walls. The room was moderate size but it was an open plan, so the bass was good.
I brought my measurements gear to see how the speakers perform (actually there were 3 pairs of speakers, the other 2 were QUAD 11L and KEF Concerto)
so here's the measurements of LS5/9
1/48th smoothing, @Tw axis, mic distance 90cm with 0 15 and 30deg off axis.

Mark Hennessy has a good page on this classic 8" bass BBC monitor. He liked it better than the LS3/5A.

I've not heard this model, but have heard a similar PM200 design from Chartwell. Your measurements seem to confirm a couple of slight issues around 3 and 11Khz. Bit of a classic of its type really. Easy listening, aren't they? 🙂

It's actually quite hard to sell a neutral loudspeaker, IMO. There's always something in the shop that sounds more exciting, maybe has more bass or top. But neutral (and the famous BBC dip toward the top end) is easy to live with and it's probably right. 🙂
I certainly listened to more classical music when I had this sort of polite and detailed speaker. I wonder why that was? 😕
I'd like to have a go at a similar design with this outstanding SEAS unit:
H1659-08 U22REX/P-SL
Really don't know what I'd use for tweeter. Maybe the Vifa XT25 or a cone.

well i cant say the ls5/9 is neutral 😀
i've used 8" hds with satori in a waveguide, and about to build 10" with seas t35, im aiming for more realistic presentation and bigger scale than my current reference with satori mids and raal, but not sure if that's really achievable 🙂

I think that English speakers are usually not designed for a mic on the tweeter axis but referenced somewhere in-between the mid-hF acoustic centres?

it maybe so but I'm not sure, but the tweeter position is lower than usual speakers, most likely around the vertical centre of the box.

Rather at the tweeter's chassis rim (bottom side) then. Maybe for better alignment to the engineer when the speaker was perched on the meter bridge of a mixing desk.
noted, will do that the next time i got the chance.
i think this is prob the same tweeters as Troels's DTQWT, Audax TW034.

I have also designed with that tweeter a long time ago, it was on a DIY tower loudspeaker with four Audax 5.25 inch coated paper drivers in series/parallel 8 Ohm sensitive enough configuration. I named it "The Slim", it got published in Positive Feedback magazine (a paper magazine then). Its 1.3'' dome going low and not harsh at all, has 93dB SPL. I have seen it being offered again by online dealers after enough time Audax had ceased retail driver line production and OEM self trade assuming the Harman Group industrial drivers backing role in full. Mainly automotive contracts. Former employees must have bought the jigs and reissued some key drivers. I hope they measure very near to the originals, they look very alike at least.
OK Steve here's what you do. Open a shop doing bespoke audio and you get to order up whatever suits your fancy to accommodate the buyer, who trusts you with their money because you opened up a shop doing bespoke audio. We used to say "custom" but that was the 20th century. That's what I was doing 30 years ago, and the main drag was the car stereo bit. Still, I found out that Scanspeak ruled and Dynaudio did not.
These new drivers are bitchin.' Now in the twilight of my audio careenings I have finally acquired a pair of Audax HD 13 D 34H, which are paired with a KEF B110 in a DIY slant baffle. I'll take the tweeters home and add the KEFs to my stash. The SEAS P13RCYs I still have from back then must be better but I'm more interested in the 18" EVs that have arrived. Not to mention too many other bits, like MordauntShort 3.10s which have their own P13 poly driver. And thanks for your continuing contributions on this forum! With you and Sreten ganging up what could not get better?

There is an interesting interview with speakerdave in which
he said a few words about it.

Graham Audio in the UK are producing a modern version
LS5/9 speakers
I agree with Steve that neutral speakers can sound less exciting at first. As you get used to them you realise they don't get in the way of the recording and you end up listening to a wider range of material.
There's probably a reason so many hi-fi speaker dems feature the same sort of music...

Doesn't seem to be possible.
The only BBC-licensed ones made today use a woofer specifically made for them by Volt.
