Hi all,

Since I'm currently building a B1 preamp, I would like to know what type of wiring is normally used from the RCA to the PCB? I read about really thin coaxial cable in this thread.... But can't seem to find the exact type.... Or is stripped CAT5 cable an idea? Help??

I will post pictures as soon as my enclosure is in from HiFi2000. I think it's sweeeet.

Whatever you have that will fit the holes in the PCB will be fine. It's not that important.

For this application, thinner is preferable to thicker, but use what you have.

Most people have an extra CAT5 cable that is not connected to anything, and stripping the twisted pairs out of that will give enough wire for many projects. 🙂

Jim, some may not be aware the copper in cat5/6 has to be fairly high quality to handle the data it caries accurately. It's use can appear counter-intuitive to anyone who hasn't done some investigation. The specs are available via Google.

I have more than enough CAT5 available 🙂 So I'll go with that!

Because I need more than just 2 inputs, I use an input board in combination with a 3 pole 7 position switch from ELMA. The input board takes care of 6 inputs. And because it only needs 1 of the 3 poles, I use the other 2 poles for position 7. That one will be connected to my CD player.

So the next quastion would be how long can the CAT5 wires be before problems occur?

If you need a softstart(400VA or higher), you can choose one that supports low voltage switching. Hypex or something like that. This is my preferred way to switch anything 😀 You can choose a nice switch with LED lighting ring. You can also do it(with Hypex) with a pulse switch.

If Hypex is over your budget, you can find more than enough equivalents on the internet.

Likewise.I used a soft start from Avondale Audio in the UK and a Bulgin 3 amp vandal proof switch with the ring led connected to the power supply.Avondale stuff isn't the cheapest but I've been using one for the past6/7 years without hiccup.

Difficult to say, but keep in mind that it is used in its unshielded version for up to 100 meters at 100Mbps/s. So I would say you could use up to some meters without picking up noise. But it's just a guess.

Try wire wrap wire. Get a few different colors. Twist your own or braid it with three wires. Made from good materials and not that expensive.
It's around .10 a foot.
