See this is where things get silly.

Have any of you tried measuring a cable, passing DC through it for a day or so and then measuring it again?

I have! There really can be a difference. Also when you understand what is happening the explanation is obvious and simple.

Typical ED stuff, how much DC a fempto amp or 10A and which direction. What kind of cable what measurement? Insufficient information.

Contact behaviour in the larger scheme of things is anything but silly - easily makes an audible difference, probably in the 60 to 80dB down area ... why does it? The reasons, for and against, have been spun around a thousand times - the only thing that matters in the end is whether it's audible. I know I would have given away taking hifi seriously, years ago, if I hadn't worked out how to circumvent this as an issue ...

I thought it was obvious, at the point of contact on one end there was less tarnish and more at the other end. Overall a slight change in contact distortion FFT pattern around -150 db re 1 V.

Just because you can observe a change doesn't mean it matters!

This isn't the least bit obvious. I've seen wire wrap boards in service for years with no preference for "differential tarnish". Since any reasonable wire is far less than 10K there is no potential difference between the ends within a small fraction of a microvolt hence nothing to drive oxidation.

We have had some battery powered (alkaline) noise boxes fail due to electrolite contamination under overnight use even with fresh batteries.

That is what contact cleaner is for (Deoxit and other brands) and common sense. People are supposed to twist their RCA connectors every so often so the metals make good contact on the amps/preamps. Connections going from the amp to speakers need to be checked every few months for tightness and corrosion if it applies. It's just what you learn as you go along and is called maintenance.

I agree that that sort of thing should do the trick ... but it doesn't. 30 years ago I went nuts about this problem, I went through all the contact treatments, tried different maintenance 'regimes' over a period of some months - and none would do the job properly. In the end, I gave up, bit the bullet - and hardwired everything, problem solved!

A cliche, but a dirty connection gives 'dirty' sound - an element of roughness, unpleasantness intrudes - a just passable recording becomes impossible to listen to with pleasure ...

I'd get nervous about fly by wire, and all the other stuff that seems to work with connectors, contact resistances are published for most connectors.
