Funniest snake oil theories

It's all part of the marketing message. In his case, he's too smart to really believe it, but knows that this sort of thing said with great sincerity will be one (of several) things that help cred in the True Believer market that you play in. You've got other things to hype.

Creativity is important when selling parity product into a fashion market.

I don't know why myrtle wood might be better, but Charles has tried different woods and found it so, FOR HIM. Still, he offered a cheap and readily available alternative that you can get at Target, and that is going too far to attempt to help people who only resent his suggestions. '-)
I might say that the Oct issue of 'Stereophile' awards Charles Hansen's products even more than Nelson Pass or me. Yet the three of us appear to dominate the audio designer lineup, so we are doing something that people appreciate, even if it is not obvious to YOU what it is.

How about a tool that is used to remove bad electrons from output stages?
Bad electrons are usually bad tempered and will loose patience and leave the amplifier if given a menial task that involves them doing something they don't like. You connect it to the speaker terminals and run the amplifier at high power for a few days and all the bad electrons will have to go round the corners so many times that they will get grumpy and be driven off😀

Now let me discuss spacers, such as wooden ones. I don't know exactly why they should make a difference, and although I have tried them, there was nothing outstanding that I heard from just that change, BUT I do live in an environment with real ground many meters away, so maybe it doesn't matter as much.
But Charles tries things and he gives his findings away to interested audiophiles.

I might note that Charles Hansen first recommended this website to me about 10 years ago. I was active on another website mostly, but Charles thought that this website was a little better. Now, we can't get Charles to contribute to this website. Can anyone understand why?

John, this is all about materials interaction - the whole triboelectric, and possibly other aspects, thing. I haven't come across a decent theory that links it all together, but the behaviour is there - so, it has to dealt with in some way or another, if the system works well enough so that one can hear the difference.

My first serious system suffered badly from these problems - and it drove me crazy trying to locate the cause, I gave up in the end. In hindsight, I realise what the likely cause was - but I didn't have the knowldege back then ...

Let me correct you here Frank, it should read "if the system does not work correctly and is prone to be upset my miniscule cable phenomena".
Marc🙂

So neither of you can give any theories as to why putting bits of wood under your cable improves the sound (why do theses mods always improve the sound), so we will have to consult the Wizards at the Unseen University because obviously magic is involved.

In a technical sense, 🙂, of course you're right, Marce - if the system was 'perfect' then nothing should influence the SQ - that's always the end goal. However, we are dealing with miserable, commercial quality 😉, components - so if they're not up to scratch then a man has to do what a man has to do ...

The tired car analogy still applies - if you drive an old clunker then you don't bother to drive fast around corners; but if you get something with a modicum of handling then you realise it is possible to drive to take bends at higher speeds - but then the limitations of using just average tyres comes into the picture ...

And, it is this way with audio! The better the sound gets, the more you become aware how good it's capable of being at times, but there's still some niggling problems there. The easy, throwaway responses are: "well, that's just a dud recording"; or, "everyone knows speakers are crap!" ... etc, etc. However, if one tosses aside these convenient excuses, and persists with trying to improve the electrical performance, then the benefits accrue ...

Why does wood work? Because, it appears to help in the area of static control - cable allowed to rest on other, 'wrong' materials. Why is static a problem? I don't know - but I don't reject something which works - avoiding doing something because I don't understand the underlying behaviour is just being bloody minded ... 😛
