what would make the muting switch engage with the arm in play position and how can it be corrected so the table can be used? - its really a beautiful table
its sat gathering dust for almost 4 more years. The muting switch seems to work but backwards with muting occurring with the arm in playing position and passing signal at rest.
Turn it over (carefully!). I do not know this machine. Usually you can see a lever on the tonearm shaft hit a switch with audio wires coming out. Yours is perhaps mis-aligned. See if it looks like the lever has been forced past the switch and now working on the wrong side, or if the lever can be loosened and re-adjusted to hit the switch at the appropriate position.

The Dual service manual describes how to adjust the muting switch.
