one interesting thing that followed my recent realization about the importance of level-matched comparisons.
I told about my experience to a friend who lives abroad. he visited me soon after. we both listened to the 2 amps involved. I did not level match them as he decided he'd rather just ignore that for starters. after he did, I told him that maybe somewhere in the future we should do a level matched comparison so he can get an idea about what I'm talking about. he looked at me kinda confused and said well, but as you saw I'm adjusting the volume on both amps until I'm feeling comfortable, it's the same thing, isn't it? I smiled and said let's leave it at that for now, because I realized the preconceived ideas that I was fighting with, simply because not long ago I was fighting mine 🙂

Not quite true. Go to the seaside. Stand on the beach near the sea. Estimate how far you can see out to sea. Find some nearby cliffs and stand on top. Estimate how much further you can see now. If you are lucky there may be a convenient ship or distant shoreline to emphasise the point.Pano said:

Everybody who has ever been to the seaside has seen the curvature of the earth although they may have not realized it.
It is obvious especially when you watch arriving boats: You'll always see the top first, this is only possible if the earth is curved.
Indeed this is how the ancient greeks clocked on that the earth is a sphere and it is how they calculated its circumference.

I needed to make up a couple of cables the other day. The shop I tried only carried one type of cable. Must get around more.
After looking at the price, I ended up buying just four Speakon jacks. I had a whole lot of domestic type speaker cable on hand so I used that. My leads probably won't stand to the rigors that the pro leads can take, but they only travel very occasionally.
I wasn't aware that the Speakons can handle so much current. Good to know. Unfortunately, in the world of esoteric hi-fi appearance count for a lot. That is why the lettering on the speaker cable must be oriented in a certain way. Also, I haven' t seen any gold plated Speakons yet and that will never do for the demanding connoisseur.
On this topic, why don't the pros sweat the details like the amateurs do? The Metallica roadies are such a bunch of slackers. They do not take care to get the right power cables for the amps. Those amps are in racks and not on the right kind of tables. Noooooo, how can they do that? They should also replace the opamps in the mixing desk with the right ones. Do they make sure that all the caps in the signal path use aluminum made in South Africa from ore mined in Australia? [Don't laugh about aluminum ore being shipped halfway round the world, it actually happens but let's not go into the reasons for that.]
I mean,with al the right technology the sound would improve so much and the concerts would sound so much more lifelike. No wait, these are live concerts performed by live musicians. Oh dear... 🙄

Read what I posted. None of us. I don't think anyone in this tread, probably not on this forum, has been to the bottom of the ocean or high enough above the earth to see the curve. Some (few) people may have. But for the vast majority of humans, we haven't seen it with our own eyes. We refuse to believe what we see and experience directly - in favor of scientific explanations that we are taught.
FWIW, I went to the site of some of the most famous flat earth experiments (in England) and did the experiments myself. I'll let you guess the results. 🙂

Back in the day, mandatory military service here was a close to two year period.
In parallel, one could do a four or six year professional contract : short term volunteer. Do 4, get paid 5. Do 6, receive 7.5

Part of a naval architecture curriculum is just about everything a chief mate of a ship knows.
(with an M.Sc in N.A, chief mate papers can be obtained in 3 months)
Means navigation, and doing tests at sea, one tiny item is measuring/calculating curvature.
The Dutch navy supplied the vessels, as a return favor for the university giving classes to navy academy seniors, I've even sailed on the navy training vessel for officers. A good friend in my student days, was a submarine captain prior to that.

Most of us just accept what we're taught, never taking the time or effort to verify. Not surprising, most of us can't spare the time or the effort. 🙂 But isn't it interesting that we blithely accept what is contrary to our direct experience?
