Went to see Skyfall last night. Was so loud. But not because it loud and clean. Because it sounded aweful. I rarely go to movies. Every time I do I remember why. This particular theatre seemed worse than others, or I've become more picky. I saw Taken 2 in Fort St. John a few weeks ago while there for work, and it wasn't good, but better than this.
- Low bass was nearly non-existent (I think you and I disagree on this);
- Mid and upper bass was weak and strained;
- midrange was inaccurate;
- treble was splashy and harsh;
- Speach was difficult to understand;
- etc.
What an eye opener. I only go to the theatres for big hits that I must see. Skyfall was one of them. Not only the sound, but so much else about the experience was bad (people making noise, smells, 15 minutes of commercials [I thought I paid to see this movie]), I may never go back unless it's someone else's idea to go. I can wait for the blu-ray release next time.
Have other full range users grown tired of the theatre. Most of the midrange/treble problems were obvious cross over issues. I could hear pro woofer break up clearly. I know I've said full rangers can't get loud, but at least they sound good within their abilities.

Ryan, I think this one's showing at several screens in Victoria, including the Silver Screen Imax (where I had to endure the longest 2 1/2? hours of my life watching Prometheus 3D).
I'm sorely tempted to give the ultimate immersion it one last try with the new Life of Pi in 3D - I found the book very engaging, and have yet to be underwhelmed by Ang Lee's wide ranging body of work. Noise blocker ear plugs mandatory
Without RT spectrum analysis, it's speculation on both our parts as to how low the content actually goes, but I frankly couldn't be less interested - to paraphrase an old Linn advert slogan - "if it sounds like crap, it is" - I'd be inclined to vote with my feet, but with little change from a $20 I'm just frugal enough to sit it out. Mind you if chained to a seat for the latest Stallone effort, I'd be looking to test the theory that a credit card can severe a carotid artery efficaciously. (too dark?)

I agree Melo, not into the super hero movies. I do like action though. That includes Stalone work Chris 😉 😛

Theatres seem to vary hugely but I agree that most have the sound way too loud. I believe this has something to do with Dolby certification, where the levels are required to be set to a certain level.
I saw Skyfall at a relatively new London cinema near the Olympic village and it sounded quite good and not too loud. Star Trek at the Leicester Square Odean, otoh, required musician's earplugs.
Movie sound should be really good and the sound on some DVDs is terrific, with much greater care taken on dynamic range than some CDs.

I can't agree with this, the film industry is stuck in the 24fps.
That looks especially horrid with a 90 degree FOV.
Melo: I'll make no excuses for enjoying escapism (if I want to see what's going on in the real world, I could watch Fox News 🙄 ) - even the high action / darker stuff. I wish I'd tried Avatar in 3D- I quite enjoyed it on my little screen, and as a life long fanboy of the "graphic novel" genre ( read Action and DC comics for those raised during the late 50s/60s) the evolution of the Batman and Son of Krypton series during the past 30+ yrs has been fun to watch.
But you're quite right, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago, Citizen Kane - they don't make many like that these days, and it certainly ain't just budgets to blame. On average, and without disclosing my own guilty pleasures, I'd posit there's far more more "moving picture" art on the little screen these days.

That's debatable, but I won't get into it. But my comment is still valid because when you bring home a blu-ray, you also bring home the 24fps.
And considering the contrast range of the theatre, blows my projector and even my plasma away. Only one particular scene did I think blacks crushed up. Blacks were very well graded throughout the film. No eye strain. Crisp detail. Dimensional, huge. It reminded me my picture quality has a ways to go.

was it just Ridley's hubris? I mean there were some very intricate and interesting CGI effects, but the trajectory of the narrative left me thinking WTF was that? and with the exception of Noomi, the actor's talents were wasted on characters for whom I couldn't care less
Give me the series opening of the Firefly by Joss Whedon any day - the entire series probably cost less than the opening 5 minutes of this mess .
with all it's absurdity, I found Watchmen quite engaging and am rather looking forward to the new Man of Steel - Zack certainly swings hard and is not without his own capacity for fetishist excess - "Sucker Punch" anyone 😉

I rarely go to movies, for the same reasons. Most of the older theatres here have the same issues with their sounds systems that you've mentioned. My wife went to an advance screening of Skyfall last week at the new theatre in Langford. She said the sound was ok, but the vibrating seats seemed to be a big hit.😉
