ChrisB - I get what you mean about theatres

Be careful, some theaters don't have the capability to show the frame rate. So check first.
🙂

Did I hear correctly on a radio show's movie review the other day that between the 2D and 3D versions, that Jackson is offering this film in 6 different formats?

No doubt he's one of the guys continually stretching the technical boundaries, but why TF would they want to even further confuse the viewer?

"you only saw it in 24fps 3D Imax? - sheetdip pal, you missed all that extra detail"

Haha! I hear ya...
But maybe when trying a new tech thing when people are so set in the old way, they have to have all options in order to be compatible and do well financially.
Only the video geeks would know to see the 48fps showing.
But maybe if a theater has the where with all to be advanced in the video department, they may have a better sound system too.

I bet it's 24fps in the dark scenes. Lighting is already such a big deal, they wouldn't want to go backwards. Then they'd just double the frames to make 48. I'm guessing it would only help the brighter scenes. Which is usually where it's needed since there is less blur.
