One of the best cone midrange drivers I've hear - kid you not - is the Eminence Beta 8.
For Hi-Fi it's superb. Doesn't look like much, but it's super clean. Usable up to 6K with just a small inductor to flatten it.

Sides are four layers of kerf MDF
My Bad!! I'm thinking ply carcass with thick MDF inner walls & bracing.....maybe 😉 Thats for later.
On with the Midrange!!!
Thanks Pano!
Recommendations so far:
10inch Celestion TF1020
10inch Fane 10-300 http://www.faneinternational.com/downloads/FANE_Sovereign_10300_Specs.pdf
8inch Eminence Beta 8 http://www.eminence.com/pdf/Beta_8A.pdf
Any more suggestions?
Is a 10inch really too big? Will the Beta 8 look daft paired with a 'big daddy' 18? And more to the point will it keep up output wise? Also will it survive coming in around 200hz?
What should I look for T/S & design wise for a driver with killer mids?

Pano,
You use the ALtec 416, correct. Was this intentional, as it allowed dropping the midrange and mating directly to horns?

And the 4344 does look nice!!
It's a nice sounding system. It's 15" based set-up using a 2235. The larger 4345 uses an 18" 2245 with identicle upper componenets and crossover. A 4434 is not all that big compared to the 4345 which is about 10 cubic ft. Here a comparison shot to a JBL Array clone for size comparisons.

The Seas Prestige A26RE4 10" woofer makes a great midrange driver. Easy to cross, too.
Also in the same price range see the Seas Prestige FA22RCZ 8" fullrange. Superb driver. Either will mate well with a 15" or 18" driver.

The 416 was typical in the A7/A5 speakers. And that's what I have. The 515 can also be used to good effect and is more efficient than the 416 with a reputation for better top end. Less bass, tho. Either can be crossed easily at 700Hz or higher. There are other choices, but this works, so I use it.You use the Altec 416, correct. I have a pair of NIB AE TD18H+ woofers I'd sure like to incorporate into somebody else's big build.
Hi all
I forgot about these. They might just be what you're looking for and will probably work well with 8w as they're a modern design that is designed to work with low power :
inConcert Miles
They might just what you're looking for, and they're a completed design. High efficiency (over 100dB/w), and not too big. And the drivers should be easily available in the EU. They also have a smaller brother:
inConcert Duke
Enjoy,
Deon

The inConcert Miles looks nice but if I'm not mistaken used a +£400 beyma tweet in each cabinet!!! to rich for my blood sadly

The A26RE4 looks very nice. Not sure about using a full ranger. Wouldn't a 'specialist' driver be better over the chosen range?
What are the T/S parameters & size issues to look for in a mid? eg. Some say 10inch is too big
As I've only had experience with FR drivers, what are the requirements for driver integration?
Very interested in the Beta8 though! What a turn up for the books!!! a budget mid being a cracker like that!!

Yes, its Beyma TPL-150H and two Beyma 15P80nd.
And its my design by the way.... 🙂
InConcert Miles with subwoofers. A fairly nice home theater setup...?

Beta8 might be abit of a lucky strike from Eminence
and possibly Alpha 6C
might relate to that particular cone kit assembly
I would say thats the right size if you want optimal midrange quality
main advantage over a fullrange could be powerhandling
but if you never play loud...
Thanks again tinitus! you are a font of driver info 😀
Thanks to you & others I've learnt more about T/S parameters and bass drivers in 2 days than I thought possible.
Can I ask? What are the T/S parameters & size issues to look for in a mid? eg. Some say 10inch is too big. Is 8 better and 6 better still? Why?

btw, 18sound ahave a new interesting 8" midbass with ferrite magnet, 8MB500
and the large Xmax means you will never run into problems with that one
I have the neo version, and its very nice, but would rather have this new ferrite version

True, it is not cheap, but worth every penny IMHO. Personally I think it is worth saving up for. What is the use you spend less money for far inferior results. Sometimes you gotta have patience and save up for the really good stuff. 🙂
