From my acoustical view the "SA-103" (SA103) from Plinius NZLD must be clearly one of the best sounded commercial available amplifiers (more than 100W in pure class-A - 1400mA for output stage/each channel at supply voltage of +/-50 V) - go to

In the '70s & '80s in Europe it was all japanese and Revox.
American products did not get a look in as the dollar was grotesquely overvalued.
The exchange rate was something like 3.5 Deutsch Mark for 1 US$ when the dollar represented a 2 DM value at best.
Bad for US imports but extremely beneficial for Porsche, BMW and Mercedes.
British amps were underpowered and badly built.
The most popular amp in Germany during that time was probably the Yamaha A960.
It won practically every test thrown at it and at that time tests were double blind group tests in the magazines I perused.
It regularly outscored much more expensive pre/power combos and its own bigger brother the A1060.

My first hifi dealer sell the us brand "Threshold" very successful in the years between 1978 and 1983 (mostly the STASIS series), distributor was werner barden audio systems, now

because this models outperform the most other at those days, especially in German available amps from Japan (the other only in Japan available excellent models nobody have heard). Krell get his successful sale in Germany approximately 10 years later.
Not all brands. A+R cambridge (later Camtech, now Audiolab) and Naim Audio e. g. has always had an excellent inside craftsmanship (hand work). Also Linn (except first generation power amp LK2). The opposite was Musical Fidelity (e. g. A1) in this respect (I hate maintenance by this brand, but nevertheless sound is good).

Just passing through from the Class D forum......2 points.....
1. A lot of the amps on the 'lists' appear to be 'toob amps', I thought this was a Solid State forum !
2. No mention of the finest solid state amp on the planet... FM Acoustics.. Manuel Huber is up there with the legends..

3 Classic Vintage Solidstate amps that really impressed me.. :
1. Mark Levinson ML2 _ Heard these driving the Quad ESL57... killer midrange
2. Electrocompaniet - 2 Channel Amplifer, designed based on work by Dr Otala.. very sweet sounding amplifer
3. Spectral DMA100 - Fast, detailed sounding.

When brand new in 1978 or if I turn it on today. Avg at. Best....funny the bass is the worst part...

Yes, the price is absurd; maybe for people who buy Swiss watches too without asking their wifes
It can not be pure class A with 2 x 130W/8ohm and ca. 200W of idle power consumption.
Maybe "enriched" classA/B.
If you look at the distortion plots, cant be class A. While it has very good THD figures, those can be obtained and I suspect even bettered using Self blameless criteria ( coupled to 14 output transistors and using an input buffer).

Going about in HiFi shows and stores, listening to all the overpriced gear I mostly scratch my head thinking "what's all the fuzz about?".
Then there are a few that stand out and in which you can partly see and hear where your money goes. Soulution is one of them.

All I need is to win the lottery.
