Beyma TPL 150 or Raal Lazy Ribbon

Has anyone compared the two? Thoughts on either driver? They will be used in a horn system above a fane 8m in a 120 hz tractrix horn and a Yamaha 6681B in a 200hz Tractrix horn. Probably from 10k up but the system will be active so cross over points can be varied.

the Beyma TPL150 has its strenghts specially in the 1,2khz to 10khz range, being able to reproduce voices with incredible naturalness . In that range, i do not know ANY compression driver that comes even close. Your Yamaha 6681 will not sound better. Beside this, its after all a quit big advantage to have a frequency band from 1,2khz up covered by just one driver, without crossover in the signal path.
I still use the midrange horn in my system. I replaced Vitavox S2 with Coral M100, do pad it down however. It plays parallel to the TPL-150 and helps to open up soundstage.
Recently i took off the backchamber of the Beyma, and it adds more depth and body to the sound.

I've got both the TPL-150H and Raal 70-10 at the moment. The Beyma is brilliant from 1.2k to 10k as Angelo says. I havent heard a CD that I prefer either. But to my ear (I might be alone here) the TPL can certainly benefit from EQ or a supertweeter above 10k, so it wouldnt occur to use it only above 10k. Its good good body and tone, but isnt as filigreed up top as the Raal which will be at an easy advantage >10K I reckon, also dispersion wise. Few things do the top octave better than Raal imho. cheers

I see you are starting to look at diy speakers. I am sure whatever you build they will be of an extremely high quality going on your other completed projects.

thanks, yeah just getting my feet wet at the moment. i resisted the temptation to dive in head first with some audiotechnology C-Quenze, dome mid and accuton or RAAL and stuck with a pretty tried and tru 2 way with revelator 18w/8531g00 and 2905/9700 digitally crossed. amps are all sorted but yeah the speaker build choices are baffling (no pun intended) so just gonna do what i can with a pretty standard bass reflex with high quality drivers and save the experimentation for the next build once i have a bit more experience.

where did you end up getting your ply in AU? do you have your own workshop, or did you go to a cabinet maker? i'm doing a variation on the troelsgraven SP98 to start and they'll stay in the studio, the next ones will be larger mains, but its not something i want to drop 2k on blind.

I haven't made any dust yet. I am in the midst of divorce, selling properties and moving. I am seriously considering purchasing the tractrix 110hz and 200hz horns from horns.pl. i was interested in them before and almost settled on the LeClech flare then saw they released a 110hx Tractrix flare.

No workshop, just a shed I have access to with basic tools.

Just need to confirm postage details etc etc.

If you use the lazy ribbon with the 150h where would you position them? I am assuming they need to be placed next to one another (side by side) in order to avoid vertical dispersion problems? If so would the lazy ribbon be on the outside or inside. Bvan do you have a picture/diagram of what you did?

what is the common knowledge/experience on what is the best mid bass solution for TP-150H to reach a desired 1.5k crossover point from say 100-150z? possible for an open baffle or similar, currently not too keen on wasting too much real estate on horns, cabs etc. i do have a classic audax PR170M0 - anyone familiar can it play in open baffle or it needs a box and how big? basically i think i have a nice line up of drivers from mid bass on duties, audax, beyma and fostex T-825 for ultra highs, all near 100db efficiency and a minimum filtering needed. i only hope i can make it without a cab and somehow sort <150hz out.

My 2 cents: The Beyma TPL-150H would fall short in clarity when paired with a Raal, and a serious multiway project would not consider a midbass driver crossed to 2kHz. The Beyma is not able to play down to 1.5kHz properly. I would instead pair the raal with a super clear midrange driver with a high speed low mass cone/dome/membrane, that can play down to 200 to 400Hz, and get something very capable as a midwoofer, rather than a woofer claiming to play 2kHz without problems.

Well possible.
Use PR170M0 in open baffle from some 400 Hz up to 2 kHz; the unit suits open baffle loading well.
Remove the horn of the TPL150H; also remove the back to make it completely open. The naked TPL150 performs great in open baffle.
Try your Fostex T-825 for ultra highs when necessary. No need for Raal.
For example Beyma SM212 perform very well in open baffle up to the Audax midrange.
This way you have a completely open baffle rig from some 150 Hz.
A good sub for the lowest octaves.
