Beyma TPL 150 or Raal Lazy Ribbon

I love the TPL-150H, but minus the H.
To me the back cap is better off.
The terrible resonance at 1.8 kHz doesn't clean up till 2.5 kHz.
I would put it that anyone operating this driver below 2.5 kHz isn't really hearing its true performance.

Hey Rewind.

Which midranges do you have in mind? Direct radiators and horns/waveguides welcomed.

I'm experimenting in this area and very interested in what others found already.

I'd also be interested in what Rewind has in mind ?
But, the other day I was reminded of this driver, and then thought about your mission. I couldn't remember if this unit had ever been up for consideration ?

Hey Scott!

Thanks for keeping me in mind!

Yes, that driver did come up during my thread. I think Pooh had it and tested it during the thread too. It was in my short list of cones for the midrange horn. I think I eventually opted for the Faital M5N12 because it had lower Le, higher motor strength and lower Mms, smoother impedance, and the lower range modelled better on Hornresp, and Pooh thought it sounded better, I think.

Today I will measure yet another horn iteration with the M5N12 (rectangular conical, double expansion, per bwaslo's).

I haven't come across much new in cones for horns. Maybe a full range like you have? Maybe try compression drivers? Or an 8" direct radiator I haven't found? My reference for DR is B&W FST.

But first I will settle on a horn for the M5N12, build "final" units, and live with them for a while. 😀

Combining the Beyma TPL 150 with the Lazy ribbon RAAL 210-10D ?

I think it's an expensive way to just cover 3 octaves... But why not ? Could make sense in a 4-way or 5-way.

Heard both, but not together. The Beyma excells probably between 2.5khz and 6khz, while the 210-10D is stellar in the last 2 octaves.

Personnaly, i'd go with a big diaphragm compression driver + the 210-10D. Much more energy, resolution and precision, and you can cover at least 4½ octaves.

OR

a Beyma + a small RAAL (if active) or a line array of small RAALs, crossed somewhere between 6khz and 10khz whatever works the best.

That's more psychological than real.
TPL150 easily reaches 20 kHz.
"Some people" might have a distorted sense of tonal balance in my view.

It seems that not all ''reaches 20khz'' are created equal...

Just listened a comparison between 140-15D and TPL 150, both flat by EQ, and they're completely different animals, despite what the sweeptone sees and reads.

UNLESS i'd fail to spot them in an ABX test, i think not all tweeters sounds the same in the last octave.

.

Have you ever had both at hand , a tpl, and a cd , and made direct comparisons ?
If you had, i doubt you would write what you did.

The TPL150 shines in the midrange. Why not cut it at 1,5khz , but 2,5khz ?

Above 1,5khz, you do not need anything else. Just add a fast 12" below, and you wont search anything further.

As a matter of fact, yes i did. Two weeks ago.

Compared a Radian 950PBbe with the TPL150H and the midrange (up to 4.5khz) is downright spectacular with the Radian CD, it outshines the Beyma without a doubt. And, bonus, i can cross the Radian as low as 400hz...

Also, the Beyma is not up against the RAAL ribbons in the last 1½ octave, not even close. So basically, the Beyma excells between what? 4khz and 6khz ? And even so.
It's a 8 out of 10 (a very good driver, still) but against 9/10 elite drivers in their categories..? Nope.

TPL150 is a tweeter, it's not "stuck in between a midrange and tweeter"; don't use it under 2 kHz (as confirmed by a vast majority of people).
Jon, come up with a tweeter that handles the top three octaves with the quality that a TPL150 provides.
Until now, despite opening threads like mad apparently to find support for your "mission", you haven't.
When you think that finding the "best" driver for any part of the frequency range and combining them in a loudspeaker by applying DSP will yield the "best" loudspeaker, well I wish you good luck....

Pieter sounds to me, like he is speaking from vast experience, and yes, that is a GOOD thing. DSP for serious audio playback ? NOT in my house. Using dsp is only one issue that needs to be addressed. The variables in attempting a hi-resolution and musical sounding system, are almost endless.

The treble starts at 1.4K so the Beyma is a tweeter just as another poster pointed out. I would call it a wide range tweeter, just like the original Heil.

I had the Radian 950PB ( not Be ), and it is a very fine driver.
But i was not able to get rid of coloration.
Not with the Radian, and not with any other CD driver.
And neither with fatigue after 15 min listening.

In the treble, the Coral H100 i had ten years back, was really something...
that awe inspiring performance, i did not hear with any other tweeter.
