Ever since I was able to build my own speakers, I doubt I will ever purchase any pairs of speakers again. I mean you could build for something better but at much lower cost and fit your style as well.
But if I had a few bucks to throw around, the one pair I must have is the Thiel CS3.4 (or CS7.2 if I even had a few more bucks). I had a chance to audition them and I was just amazed at how they imaged.

Synergy Horns of course!
DANLEY | SYNERGY HORN
I'd like to have Pano's Voice of the Theaters but my wife would divorce me... the SH50's I'd get away with (barely)

Magnepan MG20.1, of course.
Failing that, MG3.7. Failing that, MG12. Oh wait, I already have some of those.

This is a tough one. There isn't one single pair of loudspeakers that "did it all" for me.
For image depth, width, and soundstage: Infinity IRS V.
For out-right clarity/transparency: Martin Logan CLX
Midrange tone: Sonus Faber Amati Homage (older version).
Midbass tone: Wilson Audio Maxx2
Treble quality: Magnepan 3.7
(..all of these loudspeakers have serious flaws, and not a one I'd want exclusively.)

Tannoy Glenair 15" with the optional super tweeter kit.
Doug Schroeder samples Tannoy's latest 15-inch Dual-Concentric? technology in its $10,000 pair of Glenair loudspeakers Review - Equipment Reviews - Dagogo
I can't bet on realism or refinement. Only thing I feel while listening to them is happiness 🙂 They can be found for about $7200 without the super tweeters which are sold separately.

I find myself agreeing with Doug Schroeder.
Tannoys have a lot in common with planars sound-wise and they sound better with a LOT of power than with flea-powered SETs.
I run mine active with about 900w per channel.

The only speaker I've lusted over recently (that is made by someone other than me) is the Magico Q5.

Well, after many years with home-made, I had two commercial speakers in a row. The NHT M3.3s I'm using now aren't exactly stock (cabinet and crossover mods, multiamping), but even stone-stock, they were terrific. If I win the lottery, though, MBLs would be one of the few commercial designs I'd spring for.

ooo, yeah, I forgot about those. They're on my lottery list as well.
I think most of the responses we're going to get are commercial speakers that would be just about impossible to replicate for a diy'er.
7 ATC SCM 110A and dual ATC Sub1/15 for my bedroom system 😉
I would like to get some JBL 4350B's to restore at some point but that's just for jazz.

Yeah, I think that's the point. There are speakers that are almost impossible to replicate.

Everything sounds better with power 🙂 and Doug Schroeder has never heard a good planer speaker ...
