Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

CD63, SE, KI, sonically I can't tell the difference.

You might as well stop now and just pick up a Matsui then 😱

They're all quite rough, distorted, bright and sloppy-sounding but they do have differences. The players with bigger transformers and psu caps do sound "bigger", smoother and more dynamic - particularly noticeable in the bass. The HDAM of the SE and KI makes quite a big difference and it probably suits the weak, jittery sound by fattening things up.

Thanks for the info guy's. Tested both the fuses externally with the MM and both are fine. I could get a decent voltage reading off the mains cable soldered to the PCB and noticed they seemed to have oxidised quite badly so just ordered a new iron and going to crack on. Will report back soon!

Adam 🙂

Hi Adam, that sounds a little suspect! When you say oxidised, you mean they have turned green?? That wont happen with anger unless there is some sort of water/liquid damage??

If you mean brown, that just flux from soldering.

You really need to check the rails for voltage. Go from the heatsink of the 5 reg (which is ground) to the right hand side of each of the fuses and tell us how many volts DC you have.

Yeah, I bought it in the knowledge that it had been left in a car's boot and then switched on while still cold, so I'm guessing its got some sort of condensation damage.

I just unpacked my 63KI for the first time in a couple of years and tried it out.

I had forgotten about the 'tsh tsh tsh' noise it adds to snare drums on rock tracks and the generally bright and 'fizzy' sound 🙁

I started to mod it soon after I bought it and added an Audiocom clock, but then I bought a Quad 44 preamp and got the sound to something I could live with by using the slope controls instead. Path of least resistance and all that.

Now I no longer have the Quad ( I don't even have an amp, I'm using headphones via the front panel socket) and it's back to sounding how it did before....they aren't the best headphones on the planet but the things I didn't like about the sound are just the same

I expect the answer is in this thread but :-

1) I can't read all 1500 pages, have pity on me 😀

and

2) I am hoping the answer might be a mechanical tweak or tweaks, I've done the clock already and I'm a bit loathe to attack the PCB with a soldering iron again

Hi SevenPointSixTwo!!!

Are you planning to use just the headphones side of things? The player can be tamed for sure, but the headphones side of things is pretty poor to start. If you are planning to use and external headphones amp longer term, then the mods Barry mentioned are relevant, but if not, they do not apply. Where do you hope to end up with respect to headphones vs amp?

I'm not entirely too sure 😱

Why is the headphone output so poor ?

The things I didn't like about the CD63 ( before I beat it into submission with the tone controls on the '44 preamp ) are pretty much carried over into the headphone listening. I doubt the headphones are helping any though.

But then I wouldn't know what an 'extended soundstage' or 'light airy bass' - and all that hifi talk - was if it bit me on the backside 😀

In fact I've now got the CD63 sitting together with a very old ( but very well made - must have cost someone a fortune in consumer product terms when it was new ) Sony DVD\CD player which we scrounged for nothing off Freecycle.
Just so I can compare the two and give myself a reality check.

The CD63 lets me hear more detail, but is 'fizzy' - the Sony thing is pleasant to listen to but the midrange and bass come over like it's slightly drunk and slurring it's words a bit.

I hope I haven't started an argument, because it really isn't my intention.
I'm here to learn, not cause controversy 😱
