Oh mine gott... Hot tubes squeezed between metal boxes almost touching electrolytic caps...
How long do you think this Lego will play before making loud Bang and throw confetti on a ceiling?

How long do think this will run before that pretty Orange and Yellow paint-job will discolor from heat build-up??
Or..how about those power resistors at 0:40 and 1:55....clumped together...very little convection cooling going on there.........I do hope the designer has these resistors running well below their ratings. If not, this thing will overheat. "Whats' that smell honey?"
Poor heat management.

The tubes are crammed in there pretty tightly.. I think most of the caps are motor runs rather than electrolytics, (At least for the part I watched) but this really is no excuse for placing them so close together..
The amps are "pretty," and have a lot of very expensive parts in them..

I have an insight: it was designed in a boutique that used to design nice and expensive ladies' hats! 🙂

Seems highly likely to me too, and we ain't talkin' about our resident blond either...

From the design school of "form before function."
We're a catty bunch aren't we? 😀 😀 😀

Hey, I resemble that remark!
I have already built a few amps that border on poor thermal management. The industrial amp Simple SE is an excellent example. Everything is stuffed on a chassis that measures 10 X 12 inches on the top but is 8 X 10 underneath. I have found that it sounds best with EH KT88's biased at 80 to 100 mA each. Yeah thats about 200 to 225 mA out of a power transformer rated for 150 mA. Can you say toasty. It has been running for about 4 years now, still has all of its original parts. After about 4 hours you can't touch anything. Even the volume knob gets hot! I figured I would rebuild it (bigger) when it blew up.
My Tube Cube may prove too hot for long life, but there is only one way to find out. It cranks out 100 to 120 watts from a 12 inch cube.

There is an easy fix for heat fried paint. Use automotive engine paint. It's good to about 450 F and comes in several glossy colors. For the really hot stuff use header (exhaust) paint. Good to 1200 F but only comes in flat colors.
My wife is also blonde, but her blondness comes in a bottle. I keep reminding her that excessive amounts of that blonde sauce soaks into her head and makes her stupid!

Is the image there as another example of too much top quality equipment stuffed onto a small chassis? 😉
At least there is non of stupid wood boxes/panels most of DIY people do. l I don't see any issues with the build nor any problem with the paint.I think it's exemplary compared to most I've seen. I do prefer black closed boxes put in the closet althoug I'm to weak to fully implement that.Anyway, whats the market life of an amp ? 1 year ,2 years? so who cares. regards, L
Perhaps we could introduce the numb Blonds something that seemed to elude them in school...............B+ ....perhaps it would "brighten" them up.

What's the use of "bright" blondes ??We would be left with proffesional b--es wearing narrow glasses who don't even bother to fake an orgasm

I must admit to have met B+ more than once, but never in school. My first pass through school at the usual age ended early due to poor grades. I became an engineer anyway even without a degree. I decided to make another try at formal education at age 37. No B's this time either. All A's. Started a MSEE at age 41. Again no B's.
My fascination with electricity started when the paper clip met the wall outlet some where around age 5.
I sign all my schematics at work with BDBO (Big Dumb Blonde One).

:O is there some huge problem with wooden panels i don't know about? I was thinking of making a chassis with hardwood front and sides, alu top, bottom and back plate. Other than the slightly reduced screening from interference, is this gonna give me problems?
Fun thread. But I do feel like making some serious observations.
Hmmm... not much of an insight there. Engineers keep forgetting they know little about aesthetics, that's why serious companies have them working in what they know about and leave looks to another kind of designers. Thanks God.
I disagree, it's all chassis and transformers so the form hasn't changed. Nice colors and layout, that's all.
Concerning heat: as Tubelab has pointed out there are paints designed to survive MUCH higher temps and those transformers covers will not be that hot anyway just warm, so no reason to worry about those caps either. Remember that poly caps with metal cover are not elecrolitycs; a different animal -a rhino not a blonde lady.
Anyway, this was only to show different finish ideas to DIYers who maybe are a bit tired of seeing always the same. If you feel like calling them ladies or wussies it's up to you. Guess some of you think manly amps do have to be ugly. I don't agree with that school of thought.

Me too. Rather have something painted tastefully than one of those amps containing an abundance of chrome, polished brass etc. Yikes...
