Who's the Head Mod around here ?

Truth is that DIYA is a reptilian dark force, hence its size and influence on the hobby. Never loved the hobby, is here to sell and divide and mute, has no statistical experience or learned policy for balancing a global diverse membership. Its a hallucination because its reptilian media.:hypno2:

They're the ones who dominate the DIY shape-shifting forum. I can hardly get a look-in.

lol - well, for the disaffected, there is always the hallowed halls of the 'asylum.

As has been pointed out, this is not a governmental public service operation required to meet the broad cultural needs of the many in their various forms. Its a forum for subject specific interchange within specific (amazingly commonly held) boundaries.

Stick to the rules (somewhat lose as they may be in interpretation and enforcement), or set up your own free-for-all forum.

What I find curious is that there is always so much crying and hand-wringing in public about free speech and forum censorship.

While in private there is just as much crying and finger pointing about insults, off topics, rude behavior, idiot members, technical tomfoolery and such - that members want squashed, deleted, etc.

Have our cake and eat it too? Which shall it be?

Rubbish.

Who said anything about a free-for-all? No one that I'm aware of. A rather disingenuous argument if you ask me.
Very disingenuous.

Well I've asked twice now and no response, so it seems rather safe to assume that a.wayne's post was indeed deleted simply because of the word "bastard."

For cryin' out loud, a miniseries titled The Bastard (based on the John Jakes novel by the same name) aired on prime time network TV here in the 70's.

What on earth could warrant deleting a post due to such a tame word as "bastard"?

What rule was broken and why were you not moderate, instead of heavy handed ?
1. you took out my whole post for what, a word violation , a sentence ?

2. I was never notified of any rule violation

3. Sad and very disrespectful IMO, by deleting my post , if there were rule violations, where are these rules ...
😕

OK, the rules have been posted here recently , but we ARE in the middle of updating them, to make them clearer. However, there is no absolute right of free speech here. This is a privately owned forum with the mandate to discuss audio topics.

One policy we have, which has been consistent for years is that we DON'T edit posts. That way there is no argument that we have changed the meaning of a particular post. Also if we change just a word or two of a post, then we have many more people throwing in insulting jibes and such, knowing that their message will get through after a moderator is obliged to "clean it up" .

So that policy pleases some and offends others.. that's pretty typical of rules- some like a particular one, others don't.

Sometimes threads go off topic to their detriment. I myself deleted some posts recently from the F-5 Listening thread because they had veered off the topic. In cases like this sometimes posts are deleted because they no longer make sense when other posts have been removed. Some posts are just pointless and get deleted for that reason alone.

No matter what the rules are, they will always be written in generalities, as the overwhelming mandate for the mods is to keep discourse here civil and on topic. When we relax our standards the members who enjoy pushing the envelope as far as behavior, adjust immediately and become more aggressive.

The problem I have found with Texas is that it allows someone to attack another person then have his insult posted for all to read in Texas. The insulter achieves his goal.

Steve- I'm sorry that your post and point was so important to you that it being deleted requires such agitation, but we do our best. I'm not say we should be excused because we are volunteers or that we are overworked, but only that we do our best. We do insist on rather strict moderation of words that offend some , because this is an international forum and words that are innocuous some places are offensive in others, to wit , the "crap" discussion. Please consider that what you find inoffensive in your town in the USA, may offend others in other countries. We also don't know all the in's and outs of offensive language in all countries, so err on the conservative side. In my opinion it was legitimate, for a mod to delete your post solely due to that word.

I don't think that further posts here by mods will be productive. We will be posting the new rules shortly. I hope that they satisfy you all , but I suspect that some will like them, some won't

If I was to describe someone as an "***", it is moderately offensive in Australia; however, to call them an "****" is the American equivalent of 'that' word.
While expectations of civility are fine, overzealousness of moderation is pandering to people whose sensibilities are extremely vulnerable to any and all offense. For those people, I have no time. How they survive in ordinary daily life defies my understanding but we do have them on talkback radio harping on about the mythical "family values", etc that have never really existed.
Having said that, some mods do so pander or, probably more accurately, feel they must. To normal robust human beings, overreacting to a minor slight or word is a nonsense that should be avoided.

Frank

I spelt the words in order to make a point. They were @ss and @r5e, respectively but they were zapped out. And that is the point I was trying to make.

Don't you all agree that the first quality a mod must have is good reading comprehension skills? He can be the nicest person in the world but if he doesn't understand what he's reading he's useless as a moderator and can only cause trouble. Most moderators here do a great job but not all. I shouldn't be saying this, it is not my job to improve this site.

Variac , thanks for the response ............

Wow, i never thought of it that way .......... 😛

Again my discourse also included other mods at the time , who said nor did anything , Super Cal swooped in a few hrs later and deleted it all ... 🙄

* Did he get a call ?
* Did i offend the poor Custards that had to search all 5000 pages ?
* Who did i offend apart from Cal ?

Variac !

Can we elect to have a more "moderate" mod for the lounge, this is the big bwoy section, where it is not necessary to close 5000 pages because 5 pages contain borderline politics or religious discussion . Where a Mod can swoop in and remind us respectfully to be on topic before deleting, or using the sledge hammer approach, etc ....

aheeem of course just a little request, from the Plebs , Sir !... 😉

The post I was referring to WASN'T deleted. It's still there. But I was issued a "yellow card" and 35 points.

We do insist on rather strict moderation of words that offend some , because this is an international forum and words that are innocuous some places are offensive in others, to wit , the "crap" discussion.

I'd sure like to find an Ozzie who can confirm that. Because none of the dozen or so that I've asked since then have ever heard of such a thing.

And I think it goes beyond anal. Or is that word not allowed either?

So what about photographs of women who don't have their heads covered? That's offensive to some. Or is it only the delicate sensibilities of fundamentalist Christians that you care about?

If you're going to enforce such restrictive policies because you worry so much about offending even the tiniest minority, then at least be consistent.

Here's the avatar of one of your own moderators:

avatar2490_3.gif

It's an abstract painting of a nude woman.

Do you think a nude figure will be less offensive to some people just because it's an abstract painting?
