Hi Andre,
Ironic that as my hearing gets worse (as it does as anyone ages) I understand better what is important to me, it is something short of a miracle that I have sufficient hearing acuity left to tell. I guess the brain does some pretty good signal processing. 😛
Luckily, it seems like experience make up for the loss of a few kHz at the top. 🙂
I guess I have much the same issue, I am obsessed with the cleanliness of the top octave - at least that part of it that I can actually hear, and have gone to great lengths to sort it out - easy enough since most of my sources and hardware are largely homebrew. The problem definitely isn't with the driver, x-o, or amplifier chain, but usually originates right at the source. All of the little linearity problems seem to manifest themselves most audibly up there, clean them up and the whole system just sounds better. (DAC ics, I/V converters, mis-tracking cartridges, and electrolytic capacitors in critical points in the circuit path have been the main culprits in my system.)
You're not alone +2. I also found the biggest culprit to be the digital source (i dont do analog), with the tweeters themselves to be usually the second. But some amplifiers design can also be a cause (i.e. high feedback, class D/T).
I'm delaying to work on my next speaker project for this very reason - until I have the source sorted out i wont start it.
😱 man, thats where the fun is, and problems, sure 😛
But even if it really would be true, then I certainly dont understand the huge and expencive effort with all these "subs" 😕
Best movie experience, that is why! I do not want to miss 10Hz content....the compression, hair tingling experience is far beyond what any theater will do for me.
If you are not into movies then there is no need for subs.
Yeah, without subs we would never know how it sounds like when the bad guy in Die Hard 4 is shutting down the US power grid 😉
Best, Markus

Ah, that explains it, thanks
Man, my TV is 12", but I will soon have a 22"
But my stereo rumble quite enough
I usually turn it down not to get too scaared, thanks 😀
But ok, quite different world it seems
Im only interested in music live concerts
But the "no need fore subs" kind of point in another direction, right ?

hehe, Thats a big TV 😀.....I have 50" flat panels in ever room (even one pool side), I have custom HT room (92" projection screen) with the full treatments and twin ported subs/twin sealed subs . My family room has an IB array (4 18" woofers) in the ceiling, that has over 27 liters of displacement. Its like having more then 6 SVS PB13s.
Audio isnt just about music 😀
I love live concerts on BD, too bad there isnt more out there. I also believe that subs are better for in room response then full range speakers so I will always have the best quality bass in my setup and some music does have lower bass once in awhile.

I just can't agree with this. Not that I disagree with the impact LF make in movies, but, to me, the use of multiple subs for music is essential to getting the bass to sound right. This has nothing to do with "impact" or SPL - it is a sound quality issue that only multiple subs seems to be able to solve.

My intent was to point out there is no need for MONSTER SUB setups. I didnt come out right!
I 100% agree that subs are required for the best in room response (just posted that above I was reading your mind as you posted 😉 ). 2 full range speakers is a compromise to the best SQ achievable in most rooms. Im sure the "audiophiles" will be posting something defensive soon.

Sure, it's probably cheaper, more convenient and ultimately sounds better to have one capable sub (plus EQ) for frequencies below 80 Hz.
Best, Markus
P.S. No tinitus, not multiple subs but one.

If you are lucky them maybe one will work but most likely people need multiple subs to fix the flaws in the bass response. EQing can not fix nulls, only extra subs can do that.

I agree completely. There could be situations where one sub works fine, but I've never seen one. Usually two or more seems required to get the kind of bass that I have come to expect. Agreed that "mega-subs" is unnecessary, espoecially when you have three. Mine are all fairly "smallish" and I can pump some real LF when everything is setup correct.
Just got a new receiver with HD audio decoding so that I can actually listen to BlueRay with good audio quality. I can't believe that I missed this when I setup my BR system. Turns out that this is a major problem with using a HTPC as its not trivial getting the HD Audio out. Up until now the HTPC has been ideal, and for everything BUT BR it still is, but the HD Audio thing is an issue.

That's true but placing one sub in a corner (max. coupling to modes), EQing with this device (fully automated) will result in something like this (green = with EQ; red = without EQ):
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
You won't get that from 2 stereo loudspeakers.

Intels next chip generation will fix everything 😉

Crikey Doug! Hmmmm..... let's see. You are either a general contractor - or a dentist! 😀

Self employed (my best friend is a dentist....talk about a cash cow.....😱) but honestly, Im a great bargain shopper 😀 I found two 50" pannies for $800 a year ago...open box, no remotes, component video worked. I didnt need any thing else.
Enough of that....I have a new question.
What tweeters are the best for above 15k??

How so?

Compression drivers are always going to have trouble that high unless they are specifically made for that "extreme" frequency range. The annular diaphrag,m drivers work best here. Although, it's pretty easy to do with a direct radiator.
What tweeters are the best for above 15k??
My vote goes to AMT.
How so?
If you want full resolution audio your HTPC needs to provide a protected audio path (PAP). You asked: ATI Radeon HD 4600 & 4800 series support 7.1 channel HDMI audio! - AVS Forum

Funny, I know a genuine CD/horn enthusiatic fanatic of the best kind, and he admits he really likes ribbons on top
The best right now, my guess is the new Mundorfs
Dough, I can tease you to say I have a very early LedZeppelin concert, a very rare and fine studio recording of The Doors, of which the members said it was maybe their best because Jim Morrison wasnt drunk, some other fine and rare rock concert, Pink Floyd etc, and lots of rare special jazz concerts, Joe Locke etc, man what this guy can do with music is unbelieveable
All on hard disc
Anyway, I intend to reach 30hz with 18" pro woofer equalised, crossed to either a diy Rubanoide or big diy planer crossed at 300-500hz, completely 2way
I also consider to order a pair of underhung Dipole15 from AE fore the fun of it, and I would like to own them
Maybe even try to build a huge oval horn with compression driver
I will have my upstair floor made into to music room, which would allow me to use below floor to load IBs, but still in doubt about that
Yeah, lots of plans
Thanks, you are great guys, and give inspiration I would never had known about
cheers
