why are old school amps worth so much?

HEH! I still use that cd as a "standard". Has some pretty good "surround sound" tricks as well....

and yeah....1990 seems like forever for me....
Ok, I also admit I am with you guys on this.😱😱😱 Call it what you will, but it works.

1990, man I was running four 10s on 300w amp most of the time back then and nobody I knew could beat that. All I cared about is it sounded good and hammered. Sure there were larger systems, some I put in, but nobody I knew personally. Finally helped a friend of mine beef his up to 6 tens and more amps, batteries, etc. Then I swapped cars for a time and didn't have big subs for a while, couldn't fit much or didn't want to hack the car.

yeah....regardless of the actual material, anything that is recorded well can be useful. My tastes are admittedly eclectic, Madonna is actually more mainstream than most of what I use to tune. Jazz at the Pawnshop is a great live recording that many might not be too proud to be blasting at a show or comp, but all in all it is still one of my favorites. There are lots of background noises(glasses clanking at the bar, people talking, etc) that can really give a good test of stage depth, width, and height. I havent found another recording better in fact......yet, always looking for new source material.

1990 was a couple years before I got my driver's license, but of course I already had all the stereo gear. First system was a Kenwood krc530(I think that was the model) pullout, 2 CerwinVega xls 12's, a (gasp) legacy super blue at 75x4 and some jbl coaxials for the front stage...surprisingly the legacy wasnt all that bad, though I eventually replaced it with an Autotek 7204(which was later stolen....and then replaced that with a sony xm4040, another underrated amp IMO). Eventually got a 7300 and a 7100, but was seduced by a pair of Orion 250 hccas....shortly thereafter came back to the 7300 with a 7204 again...all this in about two years. Tried countless different speakers/combinations...for the money kicker's comp series(the old ones with the red and white k) were my choice subs, orion XTRS were a close second. Peerless home drivers also seemed to be a great value for the front stage and subs, but werent quite as sturdy as purpose made car audio speakers.

I was definitely the kid working for minimum wage buying one part at a time from the bargain bin and hanging around any audio shop that would let me. I learned ALOT that way, eventually got my MECP basic done at the ripe old age of 17 and installed professionally off and on for almost ten years.

Nowadays I am more of a collector I guess, I can finally afford all the gear that I drooled over in magazines as a kid. Ironically I have mostly had stock stereos lately though. I seem to change cars too much to justify a full out custom system. However, I did just finish(well still have to do the tweeter pods)a decent install in my dually tow rig. Sony c90, xdp210 eq, 10 disc changer, 2 kicker solo 10's(real speakers are ROUND....lol), orion 8's in the doors and NT1 tweets on the pillars, powered by five channels of ESX(60.4 and 475.1). Even with out the tweeters in it doesnt too bad, once I get them in though, ITS MADONNA TIME!!!!

LOL, I'm with you again! Just did the current car with quad 12s and comps, rears, after a dry spell. As usual its not right yet but I find little time to make changes. I ran a cheap 8" powered tube for years on and off, lots of hours on that, even had rental cars for work for a while and put it in those too. Started with a tiny sports car that didn't sound terrible with a high power HU and the 6 stock speakers plus the tube...was working out of town no time, that tube kept on going into different cars even put a new pot in it after it wore out. It still works, have it in the storage room.

Phil Collins is another favorite I test with.

Great minds think alike!!!!...lol

gotta love those drums on "in the air tonight"...

former bandmate peter gabriel's "so" is also good....

I still have my first "trunk box" with two tens that has been around the block more than a few times...literally..probably been in at least ten different cars...just cant bring myself to get rid of it....might have to have a farewell bonfire one of these days.

Cool, don't burn it.

I do still have the sketch sent to the cabinet maker for the first dual chambered woofer box I put in my car, 22 years ago! Thanks for the reminder.

And dare I admit publicly that at the time, one of the best demo CD's at our shop was Michael Jackson's "Bad".

My first custom box was one that fit into the spare tire well of my friend's 1982 Z28 dual carb. Two Earthquakes. Hit harder than the custom box some shop in Waco using 8 Earthquake 12s. Obviously cabin gain means alot.

My best friend at the time had two pyle driver 10s in a box that filled up the entire trunk of his 86 Cutlass pushed by a single punch 150. Not alot of volume but damn it hit real low, well into the 20s.

I ran a proton once back then that worked well, plenty of alpines that didn't seem that powerful but sounded nice, some kenwoods that worked ok, even some early pyramid that worked ok not as powerful as the coustic.

I haven't found any Coustic reviews, but there was one for the Proton D275. I used one myself for a short time on bass, (IIRC with it's little brother the D230). They were powerful, but not a sweet sounding as the previous 222 and 250. The problem could have been that noisy 271 EQ.

If you'd like, I'll post the Proton review.

0ldSch00l, did you get the CD?

You don't have to, I don't have one and don't recall the one I used. I know it was around 200-300w as most other amps I was using then.

I wish I knew why the alpines seemed to sound better on highs, if it was an EQ circuit in them or what. Few people seem to think they were that great but I ran one over a LP it was much cleaner sounding. One was a little 3518 DIN only amp, 2x40w, I have a pair of them I'll run some day but they are not bridgeable unfortunately...so I have some newer ones to try like 3555s. There were other amps as good, and I did not imagine the differences. I never had a particular affinity for them just wanted what worked best. Some respected name amps didn't work as well (some did (for sq)), but many had more power such as LPs, RFs, the typical list....but that alpine was cheap. I got another with two other amps for $30 recently. Could also be something to do with how they distorted, one of these days I might have enough test equipment to figure it out.

Yes, I sure did. Thanks a bunch!

Just wanted to make sure it arrived.

Ok... who just won the proton 222 on fleabay for 31 plus shipping? 🙂 I almost bid on it just to look inside but don't have the spare cash

Not me. I've been tempted by a few, though. One of my friends still uses a pair. My brother has a 250 & 222 in his '64 Olds convertible. With a Proton head unit I installed while we were cruising down US319 headed for Panama City 25 years ago. Couldn't go to the beach without tunes!

It's a good amp. Clean, with plenty of dynamic headroom. Rated at 2x22, but someone did a review ~'84 and extracted about 130W max from it.

Here's the schematic for the Proton 250. VAS and outputs run off seperate windings, but same transformer. Both at 35V rails, 100uF per rail for VAS, 1000uF for outputs. I don't know how similar they are, if at all...

The Asian built amps is of not much good, fistly they arent durable enough (efficient) the power rating is too high for the design, and when they fails the parts are not readily available.
i wanted an audio driver board for a popular brand, and that was known after ive blown two power mosfet driver board which took to the ends of the earth to obtain.
when you call these people, they told you the amp is not made in the U.S. and THEY will see what they can do!!!!!!!
my stock of amps i use to power my Honda CRV is all old school Hifonics ODIN series VII thats for my tweeters, Hifonics ZEUS for my 10" low mid EV's, Pioneer GMX-962 for my high mids Eminence, and Earthquake PHD2 for my two Kicker solobaric 12".
