Sony VFET version 2 AL Boards Build Blog

In the rare case you happen upon matched pairs of these transistors, and you like drilling, and you think my boards may be Ok, then go ahead and read this blog.

As a starting point, we settled on this schematic for the working amplifier. Some modifications were done from the original, and Botte made some changes to get a slower turn on rate for the boards.

Note, R37,R38 and C1 and C2 have been changed. However, feel free to use original values.
Also note, for greater viability of use of JFETs beyond 8ma IDSS, source resistors can be used here ( I used 10R with 9ma pairs) - Otherwise jumper this location.

Q13 and Q14 are BC550c and BC560c. Originally Toshiba bipolars were used on my boards, but they were not stable in voltage and gain suffered on the boards. The boards have since had the pads altered to remove...

Up and running

Posted 4th August 2010 at 09:08 PM by stripe157

As of August 4, at 4:01, this is an official, working amplifier!

Once I decide on a volume control knob, I'll make a wooden face plate for it and call it finished... for now.

How low can you go?

The prices of DVD players just keep on going down here. Yesterday I bought my very first 99RMB [that's under $15] model in Carrefour. I couldn't wait to get home to see how it sounded.

First up I listened to one of my favourite BIS recordings - Mozart 40 in a version for piano, flute and strings. The sound really wasn't as bad as I'd expected - the cello sounded really 'reedy' rather than full-bodied and the flute was akin to a sopranino recorder in its higher register with very little bloom. But there was a fair approximation to a soundstage and really quite decent dynamics, not at all 'bitstream'.

Rebecca Pidgeon's 'Spanish Harlem' is the test disc I use to check for sibilance (it has lots of 's' sounds), and sure enough there was some but definitely not terrible considering the price.

This undoubtedly had potential for the price - I wondered if it could be improved. Inside almost all the functions are integrated on the MediaTek chip (although it...

No more excuses...

Updated 22nd July 2010 at 01:00 PM by wintermute (addition of progress picture.)

I think I must be afraid of failure. I still haven't built the YARPS power-supply I've mostly worked out the layout on verro-board, and I still have a number of components (not least of which is a transformer) to purchase. You would think that the three months I've been waiting for the silmics I could have got the rest organised... sigh...

The Synergy active crossover, I haven't even started on the layout for the YARPS is a prerequisite for powering it up, but once again, nothing stopping me from doing other stuff.

Today finally received the 14, 1000 uF elna silmic II's today that I ordered months ago. I need two for the PS output and the other 12 are destined for the Synergy (yeah I know WTF?) the current schematic doesn't show them but in a case of gross overkill they will be used for separating different sections of the circuit if I can fit them Basically they will be decoupling the various sections from the supply (and each other). 1 cap per...
