UGLY Looking Amp! - but good working

nikwal

first a question (enkel fråga från västerbottens/lapplands inland)
:) Is there any good supplier in Sweden
where I can buy good 'complementary' IRF610 + IRF9610
alt. IRF510 + IRF9510, which I personally consider maybe even are better!
... except for
http://www.elfa.se/en/ (english version)

===================================

secondly :)
which version is your Good Sounding amp in your image ?
From you nice little website, i see you have several tested/untested schematics.

ZAh ONE:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Under development, some schematics:
IRF610 + IRF9610 complementary input,
BD139 + BD140 drivers,
IRFP240 + IRFP9140 Push-Pull output

Hi lineup,
... I simply like this thread  ...
Glad to see that you are going on to keep it alive :)

Thanks, Choco.
It is a good relax and change from all hyper technical discussions going on.
You know, some even at atomic physics level ......

I do remember you posted some ugly amplifier :D
Keep'em coming. When you have some time for it.
People wants to see real things from other persons.
This they can relate to. Even if they are not professors.

I will do my best my self. Now that I have a digital camera.
No problem finding objects in my apartment.
Full of dust, by now.

Lineup regars

:)

Another overview of this intended Class A system.
A good target value for idle current could be: 1.5-2 Ampere Class A.
BDW51 has got FT > 4 MHz, at current levels of 1-2 Ampere.
According to datasheets.
Max is something like 6 MHz.

What's wrong with Elfa? While usually expensive they seem to have quite reasonable prices on the IRF devices and you are also guaranteed genuine IRF.

I don't know of many alternatives to Elfa in Sweden unless you have a company. One of the few and which i usually cheaper is www.bhiab.se which doesnt have IRF610, but charges about three times as much as Elfa for IRF510, and don't expect to know what brand you get unless you call and ask what they happen to have in stock right now.

I built this little amp using the PASS A40 board. I turned the bias
down some and used 3 pair of to3 output devices for ~20w stays in class A for the first 10 w. My crippled amp is ok but
not nearly as good as the full A40 but I had that chassis and
transformer.

What is wrong with Elfa, is that they have not many audio transistors. Not many of those mentioned at our forum is available. One horrible thing is: Not even one P Channel JFET transistor, at all !!!. Good thing you have mentioned. ELFA, they are reliable and you know what you get. Like 2SK170 / 2SK117 and certainly no Fakes.

You have any UGLY swedish Amp to post.
I am sure you have built something really ugly, in your life, Christer.
Why not show us ... if you are not too scared what we will say, of course ;)

Perfect example of such amplifiers I want to see:
UGLY but good working. In this case a Nelson Pass diy project.
Thanks, mate :)

Quite true, but they do have the IRFs you specifically asked about and at quite a decent price.

When it comes to more difficult types you can always try BHIAB and they also say you should phone and ask about transistors not in their catalogue. However, you might get strange brands and they are not necessarily cheap for the more uncommon types.

For japanese transistors there is also http://www.jec.se/ but they are very expensive (I guess they sell mostly to repair shops needing spare parts).

As alternative to Elfa it is probably better to buy from non-swedish companies like profusion, digikey, mouser etc., although shipping costs can be high.

IRFP240 and IRFP9240 are easily available even on ebay for a couple of pounds each.

Thanks Nigel.
I look into what payment options I can use.
Especially I trust the UK Great Britain websites. (maybe not so great no longer since blair went into iraque)
They have an old tradtion of providing reliable and good service.
Ever since the World War II radio circuits time,

ok since I do pretty much everything In a "rapid prototype" kind of way first, theres going to come sometimes these nice looking amps, this one absolutely blew me away, even though I dont have a sink yet so i'll have to keep idle current a bit low OR play for a short while, hmm when the solder melts ,it's time to cool for a while :-D, ust finished pcb layout today so I might do a couple of boards soon..
The design is a really simple fully complementary irf610 / bd139 (4 signal paths from prestage) and irfp's at the out..

Rapid prototype :D
Another synonym for Ugly but good working.
I will remember this when I make some quick setup to test my idea next time.
Rapid Prototype
.. of course - this is what we should tell ;)

No kidding, nikwal
hardwire (direct solder) may look awaful some times
but this is the superior way to connect amplifier components.
Especially if we can keep wire, leads real short.

Hi!

Poor Man's Shuffle

.
:xeye: Poor man low on money. Is n't this what Blues Songs often tell about.

Now, when you are old and relative poor, you may have some trick to make ends meet. We have all those re-circulation stations.
Where people can buy old stuff for a handful of money.
And re-use it.
People are Crazy and Times are Strange *** .. so they throw away a lot of nice things .. into them garbage containers ;)

Here is a catch I did from a nearby house reparing container. Just when I took a walk one late night in my neighbourhood.
I call this 'Ugly but good working' twist for:
Poor Old Man's Way

Now, this is not 100% legal. Nowadays even the garbage cans contents belongs to some body. Not clear to me who is the owner, though :D But right now, I know very well who is the owner (picture taken at my kitchen table). Unless The Swedish Police Force can tell me different :D :D
