The coming of digital recording and playback hastened the closure of virtually all full-service multi-facility recording studios. The ever increasing breath of musical (?) taste has broadened beyond any limits imagined, so the market slots are so many that it is almost impossible for any one record company to cover the entire spectrum. The result has been that only smaller - more specialised - studios can make profit. The days of 64 track studios with enough space to accommodate a full orchestra + choir have gone. Any such recording is now done on location from truck control rooms. Things are so bad on the traditional front that even Abbey Road is rumored to be in trouble and for sale!!
Against this even the better small demo studios are overworked and a vast amount of such work is done on a garage basis. The percentage of the market available for investment increases to shrink (just a bit of 'Oirish!) on a per catagory basis and, thus, the competition in each sector increases at an exponential rate. The human fall-out of perfectly good talent is a direct result.
Sad world, but backing such 'would bes' or 'has beens' - no matter how talented, would require a world bank loan and still loose money.

And that doesn't even begin to touch on the topic if what a cut throat business the entertainment business is..... We best not go on with a discussion on that subject because it iz even worse that religion and politics combined!!!

mined from the back of my closet - one of my first DIY projects...
Looks good to me!!!
Does it still work?
well, i can not find the Owners Manual - it's an Audio Electronic Supply SE1 (300B SET)
last i remember one of the 300Bs burned out. Have not purchased replacements yet.
I built the matching pre-amp too.
---need the manual to be sure it's biased right before popping in expensive tubes!

Most of my early efforts got raped and pillaged to feed the next. The exception is a 1979 Leach-clone effort that has survived more or less unravaged to this late date. I built it out of cheaply available parts (local surplus, Poly-Paks parts (remember them?)) and PC boards generated using Rub-A-Dub laundry markers and rub-on pad preforms. It's not pretty at all, but it made sounds for a long, long time.

I'd never show that image to your shrink.

Some people have things stored in their closets - some have things hidden. Some people decide to come out of the closet.....
