The Boominator - another stab at the ultimate party machine

I stuck the HP-10W 4 ohms in a couple of boxes I had spare while I build The Boominator.Used the Jaycar piezos with 100 ohm 5W wirewound resistors as I cannot get 3A carbon film.
Woofers have 0.22 inductors in series and each woofer/tweeter is driven by one channel of two Sure Electronics TA2024 amps.
I play rock and it sounds great with plenty of bass. Can;t figure out how to insert pictures.
Paul
P.S. Thanks Saturnus;you're brilliant.

Is there alot of difference if i go for the 8ohm version of the HP10W-driver? Im using a Lepai T2020 Amp and im not able to put the drivers in parallel, since im using only two of them. Enough of volume for outdoors with 8ohms drivers? I might get the 4ohm versions from germany, but it will make me have to wait a lot longer and pay abit more.

Hey guys
I've been stalking Saturnus and the Boominator through the net for a while now and am currently planning on building a slightly modified copy. I'm currently waiting for the amp6basic, 4x hp10w and 4x piezo tweeters (http://www.elektronik-lavpris.dk/product_info.php?products_id=30851). I've read this and other threads about the topic, but still got some questions which I hope you guys can help me out with:

- Resistors: I'm not sure which resistors I have to use between the pro's and tweeters. Is something like 47 ohms/20W recommendable? What resistor should I use between my iPod (4th generation, click wheel) and the amp?
- I've read that the output should be pretty low when using a iPod and that certain changes have to me made to the amp. Would one of you guys mind going a bit deeper into this? I would prefer not having to get some pre-amp.

Looking forward to getting started :)

I used 4 P.Audio HP10W woofers becuase they're cheap, sounds great, and not least because they had the perfect depth for magnet to magnet mounting. For top end I used 4 MGR CH-100 piezo tweeter. Again low cost and good sound quality was the primary factors. It's not really filtered, it's got a 0.22 mH coil to flatten the peak of the woofers and filter above that point. The piezos only has 3 Watts 150 Ohm carbon resistors in series. With a 150 Ohms resistor, they sound great as long as the voltage across them is not too high.

The resistors in the amp should be 22K Rin and 80 to 100K Rfbk...

Rin are the R3 and R7 if I remember correctly...

Boggild,

For tweeter hookups, I've found it easy enough to just try different amounts of resistance until you hit the right value to get the sound level you want from the tweeter, although you might use Saturnus' work as a starting point and experiment from there. Resistors are pretty cheap, so you can get a few of them and just hook them together by hand until you find a value that sounds right, then hard-wire it.

The Amp6 (if that's what you're using) instructions have information about changing the feedback resistors to adjust the gain of the amplifier. I have mine set to the highest gain setting, which works nicely with the line out signal coming off the iPod.

Those being; drivers mounted on both sides and drivers mounted magnet to magnet internally. Also making the reflex ports double as carrying handles I personally think is pretty genius.

Unlike Saturnus I'm not gonna combine handles with the function of bass reflex ports on my boominator... actualy a nice thought, but I assume that the carrying comfort of this 25 kg monster could be improved by using some nice steel handles.
Anyway, that still leaves me in need of those reflex ports. I'm thinking of placing them beneath the handles, but I'm not sure about the size and so on... is it crucial to have tubes (Saturnus hasn't, I assume?), and if so - what size should they have? My box has the same dimensions as the Boominator.

Hi.

I have mailed Saturnus, but later I thought that you guys might be able to help me too, so here's a couple of questions that I hope you can answer :)
(By the way, I hope you don't mind that I'm using you thread, Saturnus)

My setup is the following:

AMP6BASIC
2xHP10W (8 ohm)
2xMGR CH-5 A (piezos) http://www.ljudia.se/hogtalarelement-s82124/piezo-c78561/mgr-ch-5-a-p78563/
2x resistors
fuse-holder w/ cable
fuses 7,5A
Battery - 12V 12Ah Deep Cycle

1.About the resistors - how many ohm and watt should it be? Early in the thread someone talked about using a 47ohm/20W, but can I use a 47ohm/7w from ljudia.se?
They don't have anything higher.

2. Is it necessary with the fuses and the fuse-holder, or is the fuse in the amp enough?

3. Do I need anything else, except a box? I am going to make it like Saturnus', but how do I know how much volume it has to have, when it's only one speaker and a tweeter?

Thanks in advance, Mads.

finally my 2xHP-10W -drivers(8ohm) arrived. after a short testing the driver in free air I wasn't really satisfied with the loudness. When i put the driver into a enclosure will it increase the volume singnificantly or should I go for 2x12v batteries and a sure electronics 2x50W amplifier? http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=143669

Now i have lepai T-amp. abouts 13W max at 8ohm.

How does this box tuning look like in more professional eyes?

I am using one P. Audio Hp10W in each enclosure and the reflex tube is going to be the carrying handle. All other parameters are changeable. What would you change?
Here is a bit more similiar to the original boominator, with smaller enclosure:

What size reflex tubes are you using? I'm currently stuck on that part :-(

Whelibob you cant judge SPL free-air as the inverse phase will cancel out much of your sound, especially low end.
It will increase MUCH when you put it in the enclosure (go ported if you want extra SPL).
Also make sure you run 4ohm and not 8ohm. That roughly doubles youre output wattage.

@ boggild
You have to put in the T/S parameters and simulate your speaker and box in a program like WinISD. It can help you find the right diameter and length of the port.

If you post the T/S parameters and the box volume I can post the correst port for you.

Not good in my oppinion, way to much bass gain. +5db is alot and I'm quite sure you're in danger of having boomy bas and "one-note" bass.
Subjectively it's great for fooling people into thinking there is more bass than there actually is.
My new car's sound system is made the same way and it bothers the hell out of me. Once you become fixed on the "one-note" bass it's very annoying.
